Prayers for My Daughter: Words to Pray Over Her Life

By
Sophie Gardner

These prayers for my daughter are written for a parent, grandparent, or anyone who loves a girl or young woman and wants to bring her before God. They can be prayed at bedtime, during the drive to school, or in the quiet before a hard day, and they can be read aloud exactly as written or used as a starting point for your own words.

Prayers for My Daughter

Father, I bring my daughter to You today. You knew her before she was born, and You know every hope and worry I carry for her. Watch over her body and her mind. Give her rest when she is tired, wisdom when she is confused, and courage when she is afraid. Guard her friendships so that the people around her build her up rather than tear her down, and help her choose kindness even when it costs her something.

Lord, I ask You to shape her heart toward You while she is still young. When she asks hard questions, let her find honest answers and not only easy ones. When she makes mistakes, let her feel Your mercy before she feels shame, and let her come back to You quickly. Give her a sense of who she is in You, so that her worth does not rise and fall with grades, appearance, or the opinions of others. Help her to see her own gifts and to use them for the good of others.

Above all, draw her close to You. Let her hear Your voice in Scripture, in prayer, and in the people who love her well. Protect her future, whatever it holds, and let her walk through each season trusting that You are with her. I release her into Your hands, because I trust You more than I trust my own ability to keep her safe. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my daughter is in my heart right now. Keep her safe where I cannot see, and give her peace where I cannot reach. Help her to know she is loved, by You and by me. Guide her next steps, protect her from harm, and draw her toward what is good and true. Thank You that You hear every word I speak for her. Amen.

Psalm 139:13-14

13 For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.

Pray this psalm as a reminder of how carefully God made her. Ask Him to help her see herself through His eyes and to grow up grateful for the person He created her to be.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time for this prayer, such as just before she leaves for school or as you tuck her in at night. Keep a short list of her current concerns on your phone or in a notebook so you can pray specifically for what she is facing this week. Praying with your hands busy, folding laundry or packing a lunch, can help you stay present and keep the prayer from becoming rushed.

Invite others to pray with you. A grandparent, a spouse, a close friend, or a church small group can carry her name before God alongside you. When she is old enough, you might ask her what she would like prayed for, and let her hear you pray for her out loud. That can open the door to conversations about faith that might otherwise never happen.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless her and keep her. May He make His face shine upon her and be gracious to her. May she walk in the light of His love all her days, knowing she is held, known, and treasured by the One who made her.
