This page is for students, and for anyone returning to school, a course, or a certification, who wants to bring their studies before God. The prayer below names the pressures of exams, deadlines, and doubts about ability, and asks for clear thinking and steady perseverance. Read it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own subjects and worries into your own words.

Prayers for My Studies

Lord, you are the giver of every good gift, and wisdom is one of them. I come to you today with my books, my notes, and the long list of things I have to learn. Some of it feels like it is slipping through my fingers, and some of it feels too big for me to hold. Help me to sit down to study with a calm heart rather than a panicked one, and give me focus when my mind starts to wander to my phone, my worries, or the next thing on my calendar.

Open my understanding to the material in front of me, especially the parts that confuse me most. Help me remember what I read, and help me see how one idea connects to another. When I get stuck, give me patience to work the problem through instead of giving up, and bring to mind the teacher, classmate, or resource you want me to turn to. Keep me honest with myself, so that I do my own work and do it with integrity. Where I have been lazy or have wasted time, forgive me, and help me begin again without shame. Thank you that you know everything I am trying to learn, and that you are not surprised by any of it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am sitting down to study and my mind feels scattered. Quiet my thoughts and steady my focus. Help me understand what is in front of me, remember what I learn, and give me the endurance to keep going one page at a time. Thank you that I do not have to do this in my own strength. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

When you are struggling to understand a hard subject, pray this verse as a direct request. Ask God for wisdom in the specific class, problem set, or reading that is giving you trouble, and trust that he delights to answer such requests.

Proverbs 2:6

For the LORD gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.

(WEB)

Use this verse to remind yourself that real understanding comes from God and not only from your own effort. Pray it before you open your textbook, asking that knowledge and insight would grow as you study.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

When studying feels tedious or pointless, pray this verse over your work. Ask God to help you do each assignment as an offering to him, which can bring a steadier kind of motivation than grades alone.

Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

(WEB)

This verse is often quoted before exams, and it is worth praying slowly and honestly. Ask God to give you the strength to finish what you have started, especially in the hours when you feel most tired.

Psalm 119:18

Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things out of your law.

(WEB)

Pray this psalm before you read Scripture or a difficult text. Ask God to open your eyes so that you can see what he is showing you, not only the words on the page.

How to Pray This Prayer

A good time to pray this prayer is before you begin a study session, whether that is early in the morning, in the afternoon before a long stretch of reading, or late at night before an exam. Try to pray it in a quiet place where you can sit with your books closed for a minute. Holding a pen or your notebook while you pray can help you turn your attention to the work ahead rather than to your anxieties.

You can also pray this together with a friend in your class, a family member who is supporting you, or a small group that meets to encourage each other. Let them know which subjects or deadlines are weighing on you most, and invite them to pray with you about those specifics. Many students find that saying their worries out loud to someone else makes them feel less alone with the work.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord open your mind to what you are learning and steady your hands as you work. May he give you clarity when the material is hard, rest when you are weary, and a quiet confidence that the effort you put in is not wasted. May you go into each study session knowing that you are not alone.
