BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

These prayers are for nurses, the people who spend long shifts at bedsides, in emergency rooms, and on quiet wards caring for others while often carrying exhaustion of their own. You can pray them at the start of a shift, during a break, or on the drive home after a hard night. Read them aloud as written, or use them as a starting point and speak your own words where your heart leads.

Prayers for Nurses

Lord, you see the nurses who are up before dawn and still at work long after the sun has gone down. You know their feet ache, their backs are tired, and their minds keep replaying the patient who did not get better. Be near them in the hallway, at the medication cart, and in the small room where a family receives hard news. Give them steady hands for every task and a calm voice for frightened people who cannot find words of their own.

Father, protect them from carelessness and from exhaustion that dulls judgment. When they must make quick decisions, give them clear thinking and the humility to ask for help. When a shift goes wrong, let them not carry guilt that was never theirs to hold. Teach them to rest without shame, to eat something real, and to step away long enough to breathe. Watch over their families at home, the ones waiting up for them and wondering how their day went.

Thank you for the nurses who show up again and again, even when the work feels thankless. Let them sense that their care is seen by you, even when no one says thank you. Renew their compassion when it runs low, and give them grace for themselves on the days they fall short. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I bring the nurses on this shift before you. Steady their hands, sharpen their thinking, and give them patience with each patient and family. Keep them safe and help them rest when they can. Let them feel your presence in the hard moments and remember that they are not alone. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Pray this for nurses who feel they have nothing left at the end of a double shift. Ask God to give strength to the weary and to renew what has been drained, so that their work can continue with real energy.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Pray this for nurses who wonder whether their daily care makes any difference. Ask God to keep them from giving up on the good they do, trusting that faithful, ordinary kindness has its harvest in time.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this for nurses walking to their cars in the dark or traveling home after a long night. Ask the Lord to guard their going out and their coming in, keeping them safe on every road and in every place.

Matthew 25:40

“The King will answer them, ‘Most certainly I tell you, because you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

(WEB)

Pray this for nurses who serve the sick, the poor, and the frightened. Ask God to help them see Christ in each person they tend, so that every task becomes an act of love offered to him.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this for nurses carrying anxiety from one shift into the next. Ask God to replace their worry with his peace, and to guard their hearts and minds as they bring each concern to him in prayer.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many nurses find it helpful to pray at the start of a shift, while changing into scrubs or sitting in the car before going in. Keep a copy of the shorter prayer on your phone or tucked inside a locker door so it is ready when the day gets heavy. Pray with your hands busy if that is what you can manage, such as folding a clean towel or resting your palm on the steering wheel.

You can also pray this for a nurse you know, or gather with coworkers during a break and take turns reading one line each. Families, friends, and church groups can pray it for the nurses who care for their loved ones. Speak the names of specific people where you can, since God knows each one by name.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord strengthen the hands that heal and steady the hearts that comfort. May he give rest to every nurse who has given so much, and may his peace go with them through every hallway and every night shift. May they know they are seen, loved, and held in the care of the one who never grows weary.
