These prayers are for anyone who wants to bring their country before God, whether you are worried about leadership, division, injustice or the simple daily life of your neighbors. You can pray the main prayer below word for word, read it aloud at a moment of concern, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces it leaves open. Morning and evening work well, and so do the moments after the news has left you uneasy.

Prayers for Our Nation

Lord, you are the God over every nation and every ruler, and nothing in our country is hidden from you. We bring our nation before you today with honest hearts. We pray for the leaders who carry heavy decisions, for those who make and enforce our laws, and for the courts and public servants who work long hours with little thanks. Give them wisdom that is larger than their own interests, and keep them from pride and fear. Where they have failed, turn their hearts toward truth and humility.

We pray for the people of this land, especially those who feel forgotten: the unemployed, the sick waiting for care, the families stretched thin by rent and groceries, the veterans and the elderly living alone, and the children growing up in homes where money and safety are uncertain. Show us how to love our neighbors across the lines that divide us. Heal the anger that spills into our streets and our conversations, and help us to listen before we condemn. Protect the vulnerable from harm, and let justice roll on for those who have been wronged. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, be near to our country today. Give wisdom to those who lead, mercy to those who suffer, and patience to those who disagree with us. Guard the weak, heal what is broken, and keep our hearts from hatred and despair. Let us seek the good of our neighbors and trust you with what we cannot control. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Timothy 2:1-2

1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: 2 for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.

(WEB)

Paul urges that prayers be offered for all people, including kings and everyone in authority. Pray this verse by naming your leaders one by one and asking God to grant them a quiet and peaceable life of godliness.

Psalm 33:12

Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom he has chosen for his own inheritance.

(WEB)

This psalm describes a nation whose true security rests in the Lord rather than in its strength or armies. Pray it as a confession that your country’s hope is found in God, not in any election or policy.

Jeremiah 29:7

Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace.”

(WEB)

God told the exiles to seek the welfare of the city where they lived and to pray for it. Pray this for the town or city you live in, asking God to bring peace and prosperity to the people around you.

Proverbs 14:34

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.

(WEB)

Righteousness raises a nation, while sin brings reproach on any people. Pray this verse by asking God to build integrity and kindness into the character of your country, starting with your own life.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Micah sums up what the Lord requires: to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God. Pray it for those in public life and for yourself, that these three things would mark how our nation treats its people.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray for the nation at the start of the day, while the house is quiet, with a cup of coffee or tea in hand. You might keep a folded copy of the main prayer by the kitchen sink or on the dashboard of your car, so you can pray it again during a commute or while waiting for the kettle. Writing the names of specific leaders, local officials and neighbors on a card can make the prayer concrete.

Consider inviting a friend, a small group or your family to pray it together once a week, taking turns reading each paragraph. Children can add a sentence of their own about their school or a friend who is struggling. Let the prayer lead you into action too, whether that means calling a representative, volunteering at a food pantry or simply being kind to the neighbor you have been avoiding.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who rules over all nations keep your country in his care and keep your own heart steady in the midst of its noise. May he give wisdom to those who lead, comfort to those who grieve, and courage to those who work for justice. May he make you a person of peace in your own corner of this land.
