These prayers for restful sleep are written for the end of the day, when the house has gone quiet and your mind will not. You can pray them in bed with the lights off, on the edge of the couch before you turn in, or during a sleepless hour in the middle of the night. Read them aloud as written, or use them as a starting point and speak your own worries in your own words.
Prayers for Restful Sleep
Lord, the day is over, but my thoughts are not. I bring you the unfinished emails, the conversation I replayed on the drive home, and the list I keep meaning to write down. I know I cannot carry all of it into the night and still expect to rest. So I set it down here, in your presence, and ask you to take what is mine to hand over. Quiet the restless part of me that keeps checking, planning and worrying.
Father, I also pray for my body. Ease the tightness in my shoulders and slow my breathing. Settle my heart so it stops racing when I lie still. If I wake in the night, meet me there and remind me that you do not sleep, and that you keep watch over the people I love while I am unconscious and unable to protect them. Let my sleep be deep enough to restore me and light enough that I can hear you if you speak.
Thank you that rest is a gift and not a reward I must earn. Teach me to trust you with tomorrow so that I can release today. Guard my mind from fear, my home from harm, and my dreams from becoming another place to worry. Give me sleep that refreshes me for the work you have given me. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am tired, and my mind will not slow down. I give you what I cannot fix tonight. Take the worries I have been holding, and let me breathe slowly now. Give me rest in my body and peace in my thoughts. Watch over me while I sleep, and wake me refreshed for the morning. Amen.

Psalm 3:5

How to Pray This Prayer
Try praying at the same time each night, just before you turn off the light. Sit on the edge of the bed with your feet on the floor, or lie down with one hand resting on your chest. Breathing out slowly as you pray each line can help your body follow your words toward rest.
If you share a bed or a home with someone who is also struggling to sleep, invite them to pray the prayer with you or to speak their own version aloud. You might also keep a notebook beside the bed and write down the worries you pray over, so your mind can let them go knowing they are written down and entrusted to God.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who never slumbers keep watch over you tonight. May your body grow heavy and your mind grow still, and may you wake to a morning that is lighter than the night before. Rest well, and know that you are held.
