These prayers are for the times when you are grieving, whether you have lost a person, a marriage, a home, a health you took for granted, or a future you had imagined. You can pray them in the early morning when the house is quiet, late at night when sleep will not come, or at the graveside or in a hospital corridor when words are hard to find. Read them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Prayers When You Are Grieving
Lord, you see the empty chair at the table and the phone I still almost reach for. You know the ache that comes out of nowhere, in the grocery aisle or in a song on the radio. I do not know how to carry this, and some days I do not want to. Please be near me in it. Hold the parts of me that feel broken and keep me from pretending I am fine when I am not.
I bring you the questions I cannot answer. Why this happened, what I should have done differently, how I will live in a world that has changed so much. Some of these I may never understand this side of heaven, and I ask you to give me patience with myself while I wait. Help me to rest in the truth that you are not surprised by my sorrow and that my tears are not too much for you.
Give me the strength to take the next small step, whether that is eating a meal, answering a message, or getting out of bed. Send me people who will sit with me without trying to fix anything. And when the grief is heavy enough that I cannot pray at all, remind me that you are praying for me. Comfort me, Father, and let your peace settle where the sadness is deepest. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am hurting right now and I do not have words for it. Be close to me in this moment. Hold me steady when my chest feels tight and my thoughts run ahead of me. Give me one breath at a time, and one hour at a time, until I can see a little further. Thank you that you hear the prayers I cannot finish. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 34:18
The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.
(WEB)
Pray this when your grief feels crushing and lonely. Thank God that he is close to the brokenhearted, and ask him to make that nearness real to you today, even if you cannot feel it.
Matthew 5:4
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
(WEB)
Pray this when you wonder whether your sorrow is allowed. Jesus names mourning as a place where comfort is promised, so bring him your tears and ask him to keep that promise in your life.
Psalm 56:8
You count my wanderings. You put my tears into your bottle. Aren’t they in your book?
(WEB)
Pray this when no one seems to notice how much you are crying. Tell God that he sees every tear, and ask him to help you trust that your sorrow is kept in his care.
Romans 8:38-39
38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(WEB)
Pray this when you fear that grief has pulled you away from God or from the people you love. Ask him to strengthen your confidence that nothing, not even loss, can separate you from his love.
2 Corinthians 1:3-4
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
(WEB)
Pray this for the comfort you need and for the comfort you may one day offer others. Thank God as the source of all comfort, and ask him to use your own season of sorrow in ways you cannot yet see.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a time when you can be still, such as early in the morning with a cup of tea, or in the car before you go into a difficult day. Sit somewhere that feels safe, and if it helps, hold something in your hands, like the photograph of the person you lost, a smooth stone, or the edge of a blanket. Let your body settle before you begin, and read slowly, pausing after each sentence to let it sink in. There is no required length or emotional response.
You do not have to pray this alone. Ask a trusted friend, pastor, or family member to pray it with you, or to read it aloud while you listen. Some people find it helpful to write the prayer on a card and keep it in a wallet or on a nightstand, so that the words are ready on the days when your own voice fails. Return to it as often as you need, and let the prayer change as your grief changes.
A Blessing to Close
May the God who hears the brokenhearted hold you close in this season of loss. May he give you rest when you are weary, company when you are lonely, and hope when the future feels dark. May the Lord bring comfort to you as slowly and as surely as morning comes.
