When discouragement settles in, it can be hard to know what to say to God, or whether He is listening at all. This page gives you a written prayer for those days, along with a shorter version for quick moments and a few Scriptures to pray alongside. Read the prayer aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and make it your own.
Prayers When You Feel Discouraged
Lord, I am tired in a way that sleep does not fix. Things I hoped would have turned out by now have not, and some days I cannot see the next step clearly. I feel behind compared with others, and the quiet voice in my head keeps saying that I am failing, that nothing will change, and that I should stop trying. I do not want to pretend I am fine when I am not.
So I bring it all to You, the worry about money, the strain at work or at home, the relationship that feels stuck, and the fear that my effort does not matter. You know every one of these burdens by name. Steady my heart when it wants to give up. Help me remember what is true about You even when my feelings say otherwise, and give me enough strength for just today. Remind me that I am not alone in this and that You are still at work, even where I cannot see it yet. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I feel discouraged right now, and I need You. Lift the heaviness from my chest and quiet the voices telling me I have no hope. Remind me that You are near and that You have not left me. Give me one faithful step I can take in this hour, and help me trust You with the rest. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 42:11
Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my God.
(WEB)
The psalmist speaks to his own downcast soul and asks it to hope in God. When you feel discouraged, you can pray this back to God in your own words, naming the discouragement honestly and then choosing to hope in Him again.
Isaiah 40:29
He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.
(WEB)
This verse describes God as the one who gives strength to the weary and power to those who feel they have none. Pray it when your energy is gone and ask Him to supply what you lack.
Psalm 34:18
The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.
(WEB)
Here the Lord is described as near to the brokenhearted. Use this verse to remind yourself that discouragement does not put you out of God’s reach, and ask Him to draw close to you right now.
Romans 15:13
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
(WEB)
Paul prays for believers to be filled with joy and peace as they trust God, and that they would overflow with hope. Pray this for yourself and ask the Holy Spirit to restore a settled hope in you.
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
(WEB)
Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to Him for rest. When discouragement feels like a weight you cannot carry, bring that weight to Him in prayer and accept the rest He offers.
How to Pray This Prayer
Many people find that morning or evening works well, when the house is quiet and the pressures of the day have not yet fully arrived or have finally eased. Sit somewhere comfortable, and if it helps, hold a cup of tea, a pen, or a Bible in your hands so your body has something to do while your heart catches up. Let silence follow each paragraph so that you can listen as well as speak.
If you are praying with someone else, a spouse, a friend, or a small group, you can take turns reading one paragraph each. You might also ask a trusted person to pray this prayer over you when you cannot find the words yourself. Discouragement often tells us we are alone, so praying together is a gentle way to remember that we are not.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who sees your weariness strengthen your heart and steady your steps. May He remind you that your life is held in His hands and that He is working even when you cannot see it. May peace guard your mind today, and may hope rise again within you as you rest in His faithful love.
