When you need patience, the prayer below gives you words to bring to God when waiting, delay or a difficult person has worn you thin. Pray it in the moment you feel your temper rising, or read it slowly in the morning before the day begins. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers When You Need Patience

Lord, you know how short my fuse has become. I am tired of waiting on the test results, the phone call that never comes, the bills that keep stacking up, and the people who seem to move at a pace I cannot match. I feel the pressure to fix everything now, and when I cannot, I snap at the people closest to me and then feel ashamed. Slow my heart down. Help me remember that you are not in a hurry, and that your timing has never once been a mistake.

Give me patience that is more than gritted teeth. Let it be a quiet trust that you are at work even when I see nothing happening. Where I am tempted to complain, turn my complaint into prayer. Where I want to take control, show me what I can do today and what I must simply release to you. When my children, my coworkers or my own body push me to my limit, fill the space with your steadiness so that I can respond with kindness instead of irritation. Teach me to wait well, one hour and one breath at a time. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am running out of patience and I need you right now. Settle my mind, slow my words and steady my hands. Remind me that you are near and that you see what I cannot see. Help me take the next small step with gentleness, not frustration. Let your peace do what my effort cannot. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Romans 5:3-5

3 Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope: 5 and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

(WEB)

Paul connects suffering with endurance and hope. When you pray this passage, ask God to use the wearing season you are in to produce something steady in you, and thank him that the hope he gives does not disappoint.

James 1:4

Let endurance have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

(WEB)

James describes patience as something that finishes its work. Pray that you would not rush past the process, and that God would let this season make you more complete rather than simply more worn out.

Galatians 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

(WEB)

Patience appears in this list of fruit that the Spirit grows in a life. Ask the Spirit to cultivate that fruit in you where you are dry, asking for help rather than trying to manufacture it alone.

Psalm 27:14

Wait for the LORD. Be strong, and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for the LORD.

(WEB)

David ends this psalm by telling himself to wait on the Lord and be strong. Use these words when waiting feels heavy, letting them call you back to courage each time your thoughts race ahead.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Isaiah promises renewed strength to those who wait on the Lord. Pray this verse when you feel depleted, asking God to lift you above exhaustion so that you can keep walking without giving up.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when the pressure usually peaks, such as the drive to work, the moment before a difficult meeting, or the evening when the house gets loud. Sit or stand somewhere quiet if you can, and keep a glass of water or a smooth stone in your hand so your body has something calm to hold while you pray. Read the main prayer once slowly, then pause after each sentence to notice what rises in you.

If you are praying with someone who is also running low on patience, read the prayer together and take turns with the paragraphs. A spouse, friend or small group leader can pray the blessing below over you when you are too tired to speak. Ending the prayer with one specific action, such as a short phone call you have been dreading or a task you can finally set down, helps the words become real in the hours that follow.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give you a steady heart in the waiting and a gentle word for every person you meet. May he remind you that he is faithful, that your season is not wasted, and that his strength is enough for the next step. May you rest today in the knowledge that you are held.
