When you feel stretched thin, worn down by a diagnosis, a long shift, a grief that keeps returning, or a decision you cannot seem to make, you need more than your own reserves. This prayer is written for those moments of depletion. Pray it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces it leaves open.
Prayers When You Need Strength
Lord, I am running on empty today. My body is tired, my mind keeps circling the same worries, and I do not have enough in me to meet what is in front of me. I confess that I have tried to carry all of this by myself, as if I should be able to manage without asking for help. Forgive me for that, and thank you that you do not grow weary the way I do.
Give me the strength I cannot manufacture. Steady my hands for the next task, quiet the fear that wakes me at night, and give me patience with the people who need me, including the ones who are hardest to love right now. Where I feel weakest, be my courage. Where I have no words, be my voice. Help me take the next small step rather than trying to see the whole road at once.
Remind me that my worth does not depend on how much I accomplish today. Let me rest in your faithfulness, and let that rest become the fuel I need for what comes next. I give you the parts of my day I cannot control, and I ask you to meet me in them. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I need you right now. I feel weak and I do not know how to keep going. Give me strength for this minute, and then for the next one. Steady my heart, calm my thoughts, and help me do the one thing in front of me with honest effort. I trust that you are near, even when I cannot feel it. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Isaiah 40:29
He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.
(WEB)
Pray this when your energy is gone and you feel like you have nothing left. Ask God to give power to the weary, and admit that you are one of them. The verse holds your weakness and his strength side by side.
Psalm 46:1
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
(WEB)
Use this verse when trouble feels too large to face. Name the specific trouble, then declare that God is your refuge and strength. Let the word “help” become the petition you return to throughout the day.
2 Corinthians 12:9
He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.
(WEB)
When you feel ashamed of your limits, pray this verse slowly. Ask God to show you where his grace is already sufficient. Thank him that your weakness does not disqualify you from his help.
Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.
(WEB)
Pray this verse as a statement of dependence rather than a promise of unlimited ability. Name the particular task you face and ask Christ to strengthen you for it. It is a way of handing the task to him.
Psalm 73:26
My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
(WEB)
Use this verse when your body or heart is failing. Acknowledge the failing honestly, then thank God that he is the strength of your heart. Let your prayer move from your own resources to his lasting presence.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a quiet moment when you can pray before the day gets loud, such as early in the morning with a cup of coffee, or in the car before you walk into a difficult meeting or hospital room. If your hands need something to do, hold a smooth stone, a cup, or a wedding ring while you pray, and let the physical object remind you to keep returning to God. If it is hard to focus, read one line at a time and pause after each.
You can also pray this prayer with someone else. Ask a friend, a spouse, or someone from your church to pray it over you, or to pray it with you on the phone. Strength is often easier to receive when another person says the words on your behalf and stands with you in the struggle.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord give strength to the one who is weary today. May he steady their steps, guard their heart, and meet them with a grace that is enough for this day. When they feel they have nothing left to give, may they know they are held by one who never runs dry.
