Proverbs 1:15 tells you to refuse to walk the same road as people who are plotting to harm others. The verse is a father’s warning, and it asks his son to stay out of the path of the wicked before temptation has a chance to take hold. It is spoken by a wise parent to a young son, and it opens the book’s first major lesson on choosing companions.

My son, don’t walk on the path with them. Keep your foot from their path…

What Proverbs 1:15 Means

The phrase “my son” marks this as personal instruction from a parent who cares about the young man’s future. The “path” in the verse is more than a physical road. In Hebrew wisdom language, a path is a way of life, the direction your habits and choices carry you. To “walk on the path with them” means to join in their pattern of living, not just to pass them on the street.

The second line, “keep your foot from their path,” repeats the warning with a vivid image. Your feet go where your decisions send them, so the father urges the son to lift his foot before he ever steps onto that road. The verse is about prevention. It does not promise that you will never meet dangerous people, but it does tell you that proximity can quickly become participation.

What the verse does not say is that you should despise or hate everyone who has done wrong. Proverbs elsewhere calls for compassion and honest friendship. The warning is specific: do not take up the company, plans, and rhythms of those who are set on violence and gain at others’ expense.

The Context of Proverbs 1:15

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings traditionally associated with Solomon, and it is framed as a parent teaching a child how to live well before God. The opening chapters repeatedly present a choice between wisdom and folly, and between the paths of the righteous and the wicked. The audience is a young person who is at the age when peer pressure and new independence are strongest.

Just before verse 15, verses 12 through 14 show the tempting invitation directly. A group proposes to swallow up innocent people, gather wealth by plunder, and share one purse as partners in crime. Verse 15 answers that invitation immediately. Verses 16 through 18 then explain why: the wicked hurry toward bloodshed and end up trapped by their own schemes. Read in this setting, verse 15 is the father’s response to a specific offer, not a general remark about friendship.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 1:15

1 Corinthians 15:33

Don’t be deceived! “Evil companionships corrupt good morals.”

(WEB)

Paul warns that bad company corrupts good character. This verse extends the same concern found in Proverbs 1:15, showing that the influence of friends shapes the heart over time, so choosing associates carefully is part of faithful living.

Psalm 1:1

Blessed is the man who doesn’t walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand on the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers…

(WEB)

The opening psalm describes the person who avoids the counsel and company of the wicked. It echoes the father’s instruction in Proverbs and presents a blessed life as one that deliberately stays away from paths that lead away from God.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 1:15

Lord, you know how easily I am drawn toward people and plans that seem exciting or useful in the moment. Give me discernment to see where a path leads before I step onto it. Help me to keep my feet from the ways that harm others and dishonor you. Surround me with people who love truth and mercy, and give me the courage to walk away when I need to. Guide my steps day by day, and let my choices reflect your wisdom. Amen.
