BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH GARCIA

Proverbs 1:19 warns that greed is a path that ends in loss, not gain. The verse says the pursuit of unjust profit ends up costing the very life of the person who chases it. It is a father’s warning to his son, spoken within the opening section of the book, where he describes men who plot to ambush innocent people for money and then notice how their scheme destroys them.

So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain. It takes away the life of its owners.

What Proverbs 1:19 Means

The verse begins with “So are the ways,” which links it to the verses before it. Verses 16 through 18 describe a gang that hurries toward violence and sets traps, and the writer now says that this behavior is typical of anyone who is “greedy for gain.” The word “ways” points to a habit or direction of life, not a single bad act. Greed here is shown as a settled way of moving through the world.

The phrase “takes away the life of its owners” is the heart of the verse. The gain the greedy person hopes for turns out to be a trap that costs them their own life. The text does not spell out every way this happens, but the wider book of Proverbs consistently teaches that dishonest wealth brings ruin, shame, and loss of peace. The verse does not promise that every greedy person dies young, and it does not claim that all wealth is wrong. It describes the built-in tendency of greed to consume the one who feeds it.

The Context of Proverbs 1:19

The book of Proverbs is traditionally attributed to Solomon, and it is written as wise instruction from a parent to a young person entering adult life. The opening chapters address a son who is being tempted by companions to join in dishonest schemes. Scholars generally read the book as a collection of teaching meant to shape character and to help the reader choose wisdom over folly.

Just before verse 19, the writer describes the gang’s eagerness to shed blood, and just after it, verse 20 says that Wisdom calls out openly in the streets and public squares. The contrast is deliberate. The greedy pursue profit in hidden, deadly ways, while Wisdom speaks in plain view to anyone willing to listen. Read this way, verse 19 is not a detached comment on economics. It is one side of a choice the young reader must make between the hidden road of greed and the open call of wisdom.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 1:19

1 Timothy 6:10

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some have been led astray from the faith in their greed, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

(WEB)

Paul says the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil and that some who chase it have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains. The verse echoes Proverbs 1:19 by showing that the pursuit of gain carries real and lasting harm.

Proverbs 15:27

He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house, but he who hates bribes will live.

(WEB)

This proverb says that the one greedy for unjust gain troubles his own house, while the one who hates bribes will live. It shows the same pattern as verse 19, with greed harming the household and the person who indulges it.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 1:19

Lord, you see the desires in my heart that I do not always name. Where I have been pulled toward gain at the cost of honesty, rest, or the good of others, show me clearly and give me the courage to turn back. Keep me from the hidden roads that promise profit and deliver loss. Teach me to value the life you give more than any reward I could grasp for myself. Let my work and my wealth serve you and the people you have placed around me. Amen.
