BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

Proverbs 1:22 is a pointed question from wisdom to people who have grown comfortable with foolishness. It asks how long those who lack understanding will keep choosing what is shallow, and how long scoffers will enjoy mocking what is true and good. The verse is spoken by Wisdom, pictured as a woman calling out in the public streets and city gates, and it is addressed to the “simple” and the “fools” who ignore her.

“How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge?

What Proverbs 1:22 Means

The word “simple” in this book does not mean someone with a low IQ. It describes a person who is naive, easily led, and unwilling to think carefully about where their choices lead. Wisdom asks them directly how long they intend to love that condition, as if they had grown fond of living half-awake. The question carries a sense of urgency, because time is passing and habits are hardening.

The second half of the verse moves from the simple to two harder types. The “mocker” is someone who finds pleasure in ridiculing wise counsel and treats serious thought as a joke. The “fool” is someone who actively resents knowledge, not merely lacking it. Wisdom is not asking for a debate about whether she is right. She is asking why people keep choosing the path that dulls their own minds and hearts.

What the verse does not promise is instant change or a neat formula. It is a call and a question, not a guarantee that everyone who hears it will respond. Proverbs consistently treats wisdom as something a person pursues over a lifetime, with real effort, and this verse is the opening invitation to stop refusing that pursuit.

The Context of Proverbs 1:22

The book of Proverbs is traditionally attributed to Solomon, though it is a collection that includes material from several sources. It is written as a father’s instruction to a son, and its opening chapters present wisdom as a way of life rooted in the fear of the Lord. The audience is the young person standing at the threshold of adult choices, with a world full of tempting shortcuts and crowd-pleasing voices.

Just before verse 22, the chapter warns about those who grab wealth through violence and deceit, and then personifies Wisdom calling loudly in the most crowded places of the city. Verses 23 through 25 continue her appeal, promising to pour out her spirit and make her words known, and then lamenting that her outstretched hand has been ignored. Read in that setting, verse 22 is not a harsh insult but the heartbroken opening of a rejected invitation. Wisdom is pleading, not scolding from a distance.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 1:22

Proverbs 9:10

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. The knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

(WEB)

This verse names the fear of the Lord as the beginning of wisdom, showing that the call of Proverbs 1:22 finds its root in reverence for God. Reading it alongside verse 22 helps you see that turning from simplicity is not merely a matter of gaining information but of orienting your whole life toward God.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

James invites anyone who lacks wisdom to ask God for it generously. Together with Proverbs 1:22, this verse reminds you that the simple are not left without help, since God gives wisdom to those who humbly request it and do not resist it.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 1:22

Lord, you know how easily I settle into what is comfortable and how quickly I dismiss the counsel that would stretch me. Forgive me for the times I have loved my own simplicity more than the truth you offer. Open my ears to the voice of wisdom in the places where it calls, and soften my heart so that mockery does not become my first response. Give me the humility to learn, and the courage to change the habits that keep me from you.

Teach me to ask, every day, how long I will keep refusing what is good. Let your Spirit pour out understanding on me, and make your words clear in the ordinary moments of my life. I want to grow in wisdom because I know you are the one who gives it. Amen.
