BIBLEREADER // ISABELLA WALKER

This lesson teaches children that the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and that listening to God and wise parents keeps us safe. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

God gives us wisdom, and when we listen to it, we stay safe and walk in the right way. Foolish choices lead to trouble, but wisdom leads to peace.

Memory Verse

Proverbs 1:7

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

Put one hand on your heart and lift the other hand up high, like you are reaching for the sky. Say the verse slowly with the motions, then do it again, faster, with the whole class joining in.

The Story: Proverbs 1 for Kids

King Solomon was the son of King David, and he was known for being very wise. He wrote many short sayings, called proverbs, to help people learn how to live well. Proverbs are like little pieces of wisdom that are easy to remember and hold close.

In this chapter, Solomon writes to his son as a loving father. He tells him to listen to his father and mother, because their teaching is like a beautiful crown on his head and a gold chain around his neck. Solomon wants his son to know that good advice is a gift.

Solomon warns his son about some people who want to lead him into trouble. These people might say, “Come with us, and we will get rich by taking things that are not ours.” Solomon tells his son, “My son, do not go with them. Stay away from their path.” He knows that bad choices always lead to harm.

Then Solomon tells us about Wisdom, who is described as a person calling out loudly in the busy streets and town squares. Wisdom is calling everyone to come and learn. Some people ignore her, and they keep choosing foolish ways. Wisdom says that when trouble comes to those who ignored her, they will not be able to escape it.

But the last part of the chapter brings good news. Solomon says that whoever listens to wisdom will live safely and peacefully, without needing to be afraid. Listening to God’s wisdom is the best choice we can make, because it brings us home to a secure and quiet life.

Read It Together

Proverbs 1:8-9

8 My son, listen to your father’s instruction, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching: 9 for they will be a garland to grace your head, and chains around your neck.

Point out how Solomon calls his child “my son” and asks him to listen to his parents. Explain that parents often teach us wisdom because they love us and want us to be safe.

Proverbs 1:20-21

20 Wisdom calls aloud in the street. She utters her voice in the public squares. 21 She calls at the head of noisy places. At the entrance of the city gates, she utters her words…

(WEB)

Show the children that wisdom is described as calling out in public places, so everyone can hear. Explain that God makes His wisdom easy to find for anyone who wants to listen.

Proverbs 1:33

But whoever listens to me will dwell securely, and will be at ease, without fear of harm.”

(WEB)

Point to the promise at the end of the chapter. Remind the children that listening to God brings safety and peace, and that this is a promise worth remembering.

Talk About It

  • What is one thing your mom or dad has taught you that helped keep you safe?
  • Why do you think Solomon compared wisdom to a crown and a gold chain?
  • What kinds of friends might try to lead us into doing wrong things, and what can we say to them?
  • How does it feel when you listen carefully to good advice instead of ignoring it?
  • What does it mean to you that God’s wisdom is always calling out to us?

Activity Ideas

Crown of Wisdom Craft

You will need paper strips, glue, scissors, crayons, and a pencil. Have each child write one piece of wisdom from their parents on a strip of paper, decorate it, and glue the ends together to make a paper crown. Let them wear the crowns during the lesson and talk about what each piece of wisdom means to them.

Follow the Wise Path Game

You will need masking tape or yarn, and a few chairs or cones. Make a winding path on the floor with the tape or yarn, and place a few cones along the way as obstacles. Have the children take turns walking the path slowly and carefully, saying a wise choice out loud at each cone. Explain that wisdom helps us avoid tripping into trouble.

Take-Home Wisdom Card

You will need index cards, markers, and a small envelope for each child. Have each child draw a picture of wisdom calling out to them and write the words “Listen to God’s wisdom” on the card. Encourage them to take the card home, place it on the fridge or by their bed, and share it with their family during the week.

Teacher Notes

For adults, Proverbs 1 introduces the whole book by saying that real knowledge begins with reverence for God. The chapter presents wisdom as a living voice that invites everyone to learn, while warning that rejecting it leads to self-destruction. The tone is that of a parent passing on hard-won understanding to a child.

Avoid overstating to children that God always gives them safety in every situation, as if faithful people never face hardship. The promise in Proverbs 1:33 speaks of inner security and peace that comes from walking with God, and children can misunderstand this as a guarantee that nothing bad will ever happen to them.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You for giving us wisdom and for helping us listen to our parents and teachers. Help us choose the right path when others try to lead us wrong. Thank You that we can always listen to You and feel safe with You. Amen.
