BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

Proverbs 12 is a chapter about the everyday choices that shape a life: how we receive correction, how we speak, how we work, and whether we are honest. These questions are built for a small group, a Sunday school class, or a personal study session. Each section gives you a set of questions, a leader’s note for every question, and a few verses to read aloud and remember.

Proverbs 12 at a Glance

The chapter moves through contrasts. Verses 1 to 7 set the righteous and the wicked side by side, showing how they respond to correction, what they plan, and how their words and foundations hold up. Verses 8 to 15 turn to honor, care for animals and the poor, diligence in work, and the difference between a fool who trusts his own judgment and a wise person who listens.

Verses 16 to 23 focus on speech: patience under insult, truthfulness, the healing power of a wise tongue, and the detestation of lies. The chapter closes in verses 24 to 28 with diligence, anxiety, friendship, and the promise that the path of righteousness leads to life. Use the questions in the order given, or pick the set that fits your time.

Observation Questions

Use this set first to slow the group down and anchor everyone in what the text actually says before anyone offers an opinion. Ask each question, let a few people answer from the page, and point back to the verse numbers when answers drift.

Proverbs 12:1-3

1 Whoever loves correction loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid. 2 A good man shall obtain favor from the LORD, but he will condemn a man of wicked plans. 3 A man shall not be established by wickedness, but the root of the righteous shall not be moved.

Read these verses first to set the chapter’s central theme of correction and righteousness. They frame the contrasts that run through the rest of the chapter and give the group a clear starting point.

Proverbs 12:15-16

15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but he who is wise listens to counsel. 16 A fool shows his annoyance the same day, but one who overlooks an insult is prudent.

(WEB)

These two verses sharpen the difference between the fool and the wise, placing self-confidence next to humble listening. Reading them aloud helps the group see the practical marks of each path.

Proverbs 12:18

There is one who speaks rashly like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise heals.

(WEB)

This single verse carries powerful imagery about speech. Pausing on it gives people space to consider how their words have landed on others recently.

Proverbs 12:22

Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who do the truth are his delight.

(WEB)

The statement about lying lips and God’s delight in truth is short and direct. Reading it slowly allows the group to reflect on honesty as a matter of God’s character.

Proverbs 12:25-28

25 Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down, but a kind word makes it glad. 26 A righteous person is cautious in friendship, but the way of the wicked leads them astray. 27 The slothful man doesn’t roast his game, but the possessions of diligent men are prized. 28 In the way of righteousness is life; in its path there is no death.

(WEB)

The chapter closes with a word of encouragement, anxiety lifted by kindness, and the promise of life on the path of righteousness. Ending the session with these verses leaves the group with hope rather than only challenge.

Memory Verse for Proverbs 12

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come before you thankful for the wisdom in this chapter. Teach us to love correction when it comes, to hear counsel with humility, and to remember that our words can either cut or heal. Make our hands diligent and our hearts truthful, so that our lives reflect your delight in honesty. Where anxiety has weighed heavily on someone here, let a kind word from one of us bring them relief. Lead us all along the path of righteousness, which you say leads to life. Amen.
