Proverbs 2:14 describes people who take pleasure in doing wrong and find enjoyment in twisted behavior. The verse is a warning that a wise person should recognize this kind of mindset and avoid being drawn into it. It is part of a father’s speech to his son in the book of Proverbs, traditionally attributed to Solomon, and it is addressed to a young man who is being urged to pursue wisdom rather than follow the crowd.

What Proverbs 2:14 Means

The verse begins with people who “rejoice to do evil.” The Hebrew word for rejoice here carries the sense of being glad or cheerful, so the picture is not of someone who does wrong reluctantly, but of someone who finds real happiness in it. The sin has become a source of delight rather than a burden.

The second half pushes this further. “Delight in the perverseness of evil” describes a taste for what is crooked and deceptive. The word “perverseness” points to twisting what is straight, so these are people who enjoy distorting honesty and fairness. The verse is describing a settled character, not just occasional mistakes.

What the verse does not do is promise that every wrongdoer will be caught or punished right away. Proverbs speaks in general patterns about how wisdom and folly tend to play out, and it is meant to shape how a young person chooses his path. It is a warning about where certain paths lead, not a guarantee about timing.

The Context of Proverbs 2:14

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings, many framed as instruction from a parent to a child. Chapter 2 opens with a conditional promise: if the young man receives wisdom, seeks understanding, and treats it as hidden treasure, then he will understand the fear of the Lord and the knowledge of God. The chapter builds its argument around the idea that wisdom is a protection.

Verses 11 through 17 explain what that protection guards against. Discretion and understanding will keep the young man from the way of evil, from people who speak perverse things, who leave the straight path, and who love darkness. Verse 14 names the inner attitude behind that path, and verses 15 through 17 go on to describe crooked ways and the seductive woman who leads people away from their covenant with God. Read in this setting, the verse is not a general observation about bad people but part of a carefully ordered warning against the companions and habits that wisdom is meant to resist.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 2:14

Psalm 1:1-2

1 Blessed is the man who doesn’t walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand on the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the LORD’s law. On his law he meditates day and night.

This passage describes the blessed person who refuses the counsel of the wicked and instead delights in the law of the Lord. It shows the same principle from the other side: what you delight in shapes the direction of your life.

Romans 12:9

Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor that which is evil. Cling to that which is good.

Paul urges believers to hate what is evil and cling to what is good. The verse offers a helpful New Testament echo of Proverbs 2:14, calling for a heart that turns away from wrongdoing rather than finding pleasure in it.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 2:14

Lord, you see the places in my heart where I am tempted to find pleasure in what is crooked or unkind. Give me a love for what is true and upright, and let my joy be shaped by your goodness rather than by the thrill of doing wrong. Guard my steps and my desires, and help me choose the straight path, trusting that your wisdom leads to real life. Amen.
