BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH GARCIA

Proverbs 2:14 warns about people who take pleasure in doing wrong and find enjoyment in twisted, corrupt behavior. The verse describes a kind of heart that has come to celebrate evil rather than simply stumble into it. It is spoken by a father to his son in the opening chapters of Proverbs, where wisdom is portrayed as a guide that protects a young person from the company of those who lead others astray.

What Proverbs 2:14 Means

The verse uses two phrases that move in the same direction. The first, “rejoice to do evil,” describes people who feel gladness when they are doing wrong, as if sin were a festival rather than a regret. The second, “delight in the perverseness of evil,” goes a step further. Perverseness here means crookedness or twistedness, so the verse is describing people who find pleasure in the bent and distorted side of wrongdoing, enjoying the cleverness of a dishonest scheme or the thrill of cruelty.

What the verse does not do is give a formula for avoiding every temptation or promise that bad people will always be easy to spot. It describes a posture of the heart, and it asks the reader to pay attention to the company they keep and the things that give them a sense of satisfaction. The warning is about where joy is found, and whether a person’s sense of what is fun or admirable has been bent toward what harms others.

The Context of Proverbs 2:14

The book of Proverbs is traditionally attributed to Solomon, with additional collections added by other wise teachers. Chapter 2 is written as an extended appeal from a parent to a child, urging the young person to seek wisdom and understanding as one would search for hidden treasure. The audience is the young man who is being invited to build his life on the fear of the Lord and the careful pursuit of discernment.

The verses just before and after describe the paths that wisdom protects a person from. Verses 12 and 13 speak of those who speak perverse things and forsake the paths of uprightness, while verses 15 through 17 name those who are crooked in their ways and the seductive woman who forgets the covenant of her God. Read in this setting, Proverbs 2:14 is not an isolated observation about wicked people in general. It is one step in a sustained warning about the particular ways that moral drift, flattering speech and broken loyalty pull a young person away from God and from integrity.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 2:14

Psalm 1:1

Blessed is the man who doesn’t walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand on the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers…

(WEB)

This psalm opens by describing the person who refuses to walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners. It parallels Proverbs 2:14 by showing that the company a person keeps shapes their delights, and that a blessed life begins with refusing the path of those who mock what is right.

Romans 12:9

Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor that which is evil. Cling to that which is good.

(WEB)

Paul calls believers to hate what is evil and hold fast to what is good. Where Proverbs 2:14 warns about taking pleasure in wrong, this verse sets out the opposite posture, a heart that recoils from evil and clings to goodness, so that the affections are reshaped rather than merely the behavior.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 2:14

Lord, you see the places in my heart where I have been pleased by things that are crooked or unkind, and I confess that some of my enjoyments have drifted from what honors you. Give me a clear sense of what is truly good, so that I feel grief at what harms others and gladness at what is honest and just. Shape my delights by your wisdom, and surround me with people who love what is right. Teach me to look for joy in your ways, and keep me from taking pride in what is twisted. Amen.
