BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

Proverbs 22:6 is a teaching that shapes children early, with the hope that the habits and character formed in youth will keep guiding them later in life. It is a proverb, a short saying meant to express a general pattern of life rather than a guarantee for every household. The words come from the wisdom collection attributed to Solomon, and they are offered to parents and teachers as well as to the young people in their care.

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

What Proverbs 22:6 Means

The phrase “train up” comes from a word that describes dedicated, patient instruction, the kind a gardener gives a young tree or a craftsman gives an apprentice. It is not a single lecture but a steady shaping over time. The phrase “the way he should go” points to a direction, a path of wisdom, honesty and faithfulness that the child is gently guided onto, while the child is still learning to walk on their own.

The second half describes a hoped-for result: that when the child grows old, they will not turn away from that path. The verse uses the word “depart” to picture someone who wanders off a road they once knew. It is a proverb about likelihood and pattern, not a promise that every child will remain faithful. Many faithful parents have raised children who later struggled, and the verse does not deny that. What it offers is a reason for early, consistent care, and a picture of what that care is aiming at.

The Context of Proverbs 22:6

Proverbs is a book of short, memorable sayings gathered for the instruction of the young and of anyone seeking a wise life. Its opening chapters describe the author as writing to a son, and much of the book carries that tone of a parent or teacher speaking to the next generation. Verse 6 belongs to a longer section, Proverbs 22:17 to 24:22, that is often read as a collection of wisdom sayings in the style of ancient Near Eastern instruction.

The surrounding verses help explain the emphasis. Just before, verse 5 speaks of the snares along the path of the wicked, and verse 4 links humility and the fear of the LORD to life and honor. Verse 6 therefore reads as a way to keep a child out of those snares. Right after it, verses 7 to 9 turn to money, debt and generosity. Read together, the verses show that the path a child is trained onto includes how they handle wealth, power and the needs of others, not only private piety.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 22:6

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

6 These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart; 7 and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.

(WEB)

These verses describe parents teaching God’s commands at home, on the road, when lying down and when rising. They show the same daily, unhurried shaping of children that Proverbs 22:6 has in view, rooted in love for God.

Ephesians 6:4

You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

(WEB)

Paul addresses fathers here and warns against provoking children while calling them to instruction and nurture. It balances the call to train with a reminder that the way of teaching should reflect the character of the God being taught.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 22:6

Lord, you know the children and young people in my life, and you know the ways I have tried and failed to guide them. Give me patience for the small daily conversations, and wisdom to point them toward what is good and true. Help me live in a way that they can see and follow. Where I cannot control their choices, I ask you to keep their hearts tender toward you and to draw them back whenever they wander. Thank you for your faithfulness across generations. Amen.
