Proverbs 31:10 asks a rhetorical question: who can find a woman of real worth? The verse answers by saying such a woman is more valuable than rubies, the most precious gemstones of the ancient world. It is spoken by a mother, King Lemuel’s mother, who is giving her son counsel about the kind of wife and life worth seeking. The opening of the chapter is her advice, so the verse is best read as a parent’s words to a young man.

Who can find a worthy woman? For her price is far above rubies.

What Proverbs 31:10 Means

The question “Who can find…?” does not claim such a woman is impossible to meet. It expresses how rare and precious true character is, the way a person might say, “Where can you find a good friend like this?” The word “worthy” points to excellence of character and competence rather than beauty or social standing. Proverbs elsewhere says charm is deceptive and beauty fades, so the verse is steering attention toward something more lasting.

The comparison to rubies is the verse’s way of measuring value. Rubies were costly and prized, so saying a person’s worth is “far above” them means her contribution to a household cannot be bought or fully priced. The verse does not promise that anyone who works hard will be rewarded with a perfect spouse. It describes a quality to honor and pursue, and it leaves room for the reader to grow into that character.

The Context of Proverbs 31:10

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom sayings traditionally attributed to Solomon, with additional sections credited to others, including the words of Agur and Lemuel. Its purpose is to teach the young how to live skillfully before God, and wisdom in Proverbs is practical as well as spiritual. The final chapter pictures a woman whose life is marked by diligence, generosity, strength and fear of the Lord.

The verses just before this one, 7 through 9, speak about justice for the poor and needy and about speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves. This makes verse 10 more than a note about marriage. The worthy woman described afterward is one who serves others and handles her work with care, so the question of her worth is tied to how she loves and acts in the wider community.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 31:10

1 Peter 3:4

But in the hidden person of the heart, in the incorruptible adornment of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God very precious.

(WEB)

Peter contrasts outward adornment with the quiet, gentle spirit that God values. It echoes Proverbs 31:10 by pointing past surface appearance toward an inner beauty that has lasting worth in God’s sight.

Proverbs 31:30

Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.

(WEB)

This verse, later in the same chapter, warns that charm is deceptive and beauty fades, while a woman who fears the Lord is worthy of praise. It completes the thought begun in verse 10 by naming where lasting worth comes from.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 31:10

Lord, you see the heart of each person more clearly than I ever can. Help me to value what you value, to look past appearances and see the worth of faithful character and steady love. Shape me into someone whose life builds up others, whose words and work reflect your wisdom, and whose faith is real in ordinary days. Teach me to seek what is truly precious and to trust you with the rest. Amen.
