BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This lesson teaches children that God values people who work hard, help others, and love Him above everything else, and that a woman who fears the Lord is worth praising. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God loves people who work hard, share with others, and trust Him. Those things make a home full of love, and God is pleased when we live that way.

Memory Verse

Proverbs 31:30

Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.

(WEB)

Have the children stand and put their hands over their hearts on the words “fears the LORD.” Then they can slowly raise both arms up high, like a person worshiping God, on the words “shall be praised.” Repeat it together three times.

The Story: Proverbs 31 for Kids

Long ago, a mother gave her son some wise advice. She was a queen, and her son Lemuel was a king. She told him that kings should not drink too much wine, because wine can make a person forget what is fair and right. She wanted him to take care of people who were poor, sick, or sad.

Then the chapter talks about a special kind of woman. She is a woman who fears the Lord, which means she loves God and wants to obey Him. She works hard every day, and she is not lazy. She gets up early to feed her family, and she takes care of the servants who help her.

She is also very smart in business. She buys a field, plants a vineyard, and sews clothes to sell. Her family is warm and safe, even when the weather turns cold. She helps people who need food and kindness, and she opens her hands to share with them.

Her family loves her very much. Her children say she is blessed, and her husband says, “Many women do good things, but you are the best of them all.” The chapter says that charm and beauty do not last, but a woman who loves God will be praised.

Read It Together

Proverbs 31:10

Who can find a worthy woman? For her price is far above rubies.

(WEB)

Point out that the chapter starts with a question, asking who can find such a woman. Explain that this kind of person is rare and valuable, like something precious that is worth more than jewels.

Proverbs 31:20

She opens her arms to the poor; yes, she extends her hands to the needy.

(WEB)

Show the children how the woman reaches out her hands to help people who are poor. Ask them what they could do this week to share something they have with someone who needs it.

Proverbs 31:28-29

28 Her children rise up and call her blessed. Her husband also praises her: 29 “Many women do noble things, but you excel them all.”

(WEB)

Point out how her family speaks well of her and praises her. Explain that kind words and thankfulness are one way we show love to people who work hard for us.

Talk About It

  • What is one thing the woman in this chapter does every morning to help her family?
  • How did the woman show kindness to people who were poor?
  • Why do you think the chapter says that beauty and charm do not last?
  • What is a way you can help your family the way this woman helped hers?
  • How can we show God that we love Him in our everyday work and play?

Activity Ideas

Hand and Heart Craft

Give each child a piece of paper and crayons or markers. Ask them to trace their hand and draw a heart in the middle of the palm. Inside the heart, they can write or draw one way they can help someone this week. Hang the finished hands on the wall as a reminder that God wants us to open our hands to others.

Busy Helper Relay

Set up a few baskets of clean laundry, a bowl of toy blocks, and a bucket of toys around the room. Divide the children into two teams and have them race to carry items to their correct places, cheering each other on. Afterward, talk about how this woman worked eagerly with her hands, and how helping others can be fun when we do it together.

Thankful Note Take-Home

Give each child a small card and an envelope. Ask them to write or draw a thank-you message for a family member who works hard at home. Encourage them to deliver it that evening and read it aloud to their family. Explain that the family in this story praised the woman, and we can praise the people who love us too.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter paints a picture of a woman who is wise, hardworking, generous, and devoted to God. It was written as a description of the kind of person who honors the Lord, and it praises both her character and her actions. Many readers see it as an encouragement to live with faithfulness and care for others in ordinary daily life.

When teaching children, avoid suggesting that a good woman must do every task listed or that a child’s worth depends on how much they do. Keep the focus on loving God and caring for others, so children do not feel pressure to be perfect at chores.

A Prayer to Close

Dear Lord, thank You for families and for the people who work hard to take care of us. Help us to love You with our whole hearts, to share what we have, and to be kind to people who need help. Teach us to honor You in everything we do. Amen.
