BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH GARCIA

If you are looking for Proverbs 4 Bible study questions, this set is built to take a small group, a Sunday class or your own quiet time from the first verse to a practical response. The questions move in three stages: what the chapter says, what it means, and how to live it. Each question comes with a leader’s note so you can guide discussion without preparing a separate lesson.

Proverbs 4 at a Glance

Proverbs 4 is written as a father speaking to his son. He recalls his own upbringing, urges the listener to get wisdom at any cost, and promises that wisdom brings honor, length of days and a secure path. The chapter then contrasts two ways of walking: the way of the wicked, which stumbles in darkness, and the way of the righteous, which grows brighter like morning light.

The second half turns from instruction to practice. The son is told to guard his heart, put away a crooked mouth and keep his eyes fixed straight ahead. The closing images of level paths and firm steps tie the whole chapter together around one question: where is your life headed?

Observation Questions

Use these first to make sure everyone has read the text carefully before anyone offers an interpretation. Let people answer from the words on the page, and ask them to point to a verse when they can.

Proverbs 4:5-7

5 Get wisdom. Get understanding. Don’t forget, and don’t deviate from the words of my mouth. 6 Don’t forsake her, and she will preserve you. Love her, and she will keep you. 7 Wisdom is supreme. Get wisdom. Yes, though it costs all your possessions, get understanding.

Read this passage early in the session to set the chapter’s central command. Hearing the repeated call to get wisdom aloud helps the group feel its urgency before the discussion begins.

Proverbs 4:18

But the path of the righteous is like the dawning light, that shines more and more until the perfect day.

(WEB)

This single verse gives the image of the righteous path as growing light, which many people find encouraging. Reading it alone allows a pause for reflection on how that light develops over time.

Proverbs 4:23

Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life.

(WEB)

Reading this verse aloud draws attention to the heart as the source of life. It works well as a transition from observation to application, since it names the inward focus the rest of the chapter depends on.

Proverbs 4:25-27

25 Let your eyes look straight ahead. Fix your gaze directly before you. 26 Make the path of your feet level. Let all of your ways be established. 27 Don’t turn to the right hand nor to the left. Remove your foot from evil.

These closing verses give a clear picture of focused, steady living. Reading them at the end of the teaching time lets the group leave with a memorable image of direction.

Proverbs 4:10-12

10 Listen, my son, and receive my sayings. The years of your life will be many. 11 I have taught you in the way of wisdom. I have led you in straight paths. 12 When you go, your steps will not be hampered. When you run, you will not stumble.

(WEB)

Reading the promise of many years alongside the image of unhindered steps encourages the group to see wisdom as a path that leads somewhere good. It also sets up the contrast with the wicked that follows in the chapter.

Memory Verse for Proverbs 4

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come to you asking for the wisdom this chapter describes. Teach us to receive instruction gladly, to value understanding above what we own, and to keep our hearts with care because our lives flow from them. Guard our mouths from crooked speech, and give us eyes that look straight ahead when the way is unclear. Help us walk the path that grows brighter as we follow you. Thank you for your word and for the people gathered here to learn it together. Amen.
