BIBLEREADER // ISABELLA WALKER

This lesson teaches children that God’s wisdom is like a light that guides us on the right path, and that we should listen to it and keep it close. It is written for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God’s wisdom is a good path to walk on, and we can choose to listen to it and stay on that path every day.

Memory Verse

Proverbs 4:23

Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life.

(WEB)

Place both hands over your heart when you say this verse together. Then slowly move your hands outward, as if you are opening a gift from God. Doing this helps children picture keeping their hearts close to God.

The Story: Proverbs 4 for Kids

Long ago, a wise father sat down with his children to teach them something important. He loved them very much, and he wanted them to grow up wise and good. He said, “Listen to me, my children. Pay attention, because what I am teaching you will help you your whole life.”

The father told his children to get wisdom and understanding, and to never forget his words. He said wisdom is like a beautiful crown on your head. If you love wisdom and hold on to it, wisdom will protect you and lead you to honor. He gave them this simple message: “Hold on to wisdom, for she is your life.”

Next, the father warned his children about walking the wrong way. He said that bad people are on a dark road, and they do not even know what they are stumbling over. He told his children to stay away from that path and to walk away from it quickly. Then he said, “Turn from evil, and keep going on the good road.”

The father then compared the good path to the sunrise. The light of the morning starts out small, but it grows brighter and brighter until the whole day is full of light. He wanted his children to know that doing what is right makes life brighter and brighter over time. Good choices are like that little light that keeps growing.

Finally, the father asked his children to pay close attention to his words and to keep them in their hearts. He told them to watch where they step and to walk straight ahead. He wanted them to be steady, so they would not wander off the good path. This is how the father taught his children to stay on the way of wisdom.

Read It Together

Proverbs 4:7

Wisdom is supreme. Get wisdom. Yes, though it costs all your possessions, get understanding.

(WEB)

Point out that wisdom is worth more than anything we own. Ask the children what kinds of things they might want to get, and then talk about why getting wisdom is even more important. Explain that wisdom comes from God and helps us make good choices.

Proverbs 4:18

But the path of the righteous is like the dawning light, that shines more and more until the perfect day.

(WEB)

Show the children how the morning sun begins small and then grows brighter. Explain that choosing to do what is right is like that growing light, because it makes our lives better as we keep choosing it. Encourage them to see God’s path as a path that gets brighter.

Proverbs 4:26-27

26 Make the path of your feet level. Let all of your ways be established. 27 Don’t turn to the right hand nor to the left. Remove your foot from evil.

(WEB)

Point out how the father tells his child to keep steady feet and not turn aside. Explain that staying on the good path means we do not wander toward wrong choices. Talk about how we can ask God to help us walk straight and stay close to what is right.

Talk About It

  • What is one thing you think is worth more than money, and why?
  • How does wisdom help us when we have to make a hard choice?
  • Why do you think the path of the good people gets brighter, like the sunrise?
  • What is one way you can turn away from something bad when someone asks you to do it?
  • How can we keep God’s words close to our hearts during the week?

Activity Ideas

Sunrise Path Drawing

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask each child to draw a winding path from the bottom of the paper to a bright sun at the top. Have them color the sun with yellow and orange, and make the path lighter as it gets closer to the sun. As they draw, talk about how wisdom leads us toward brighter days.

Stay on the Path Game

Use masking tape or string to make a straight line on the floor. Have the children walk along the line with their arms out, keeping their eyes straight ahead. Each time a child steps off, ask them a question about wisdom and let them try again. This game shows how keeping our eyes forward helps us stay on the right way.

Heart Reminder Card

You will need an index card, a marker, and a small craft heart or a sticker of a heart. Ask each child to write Proverbs 4:23 in simple words on the card, or to draw a heart with the words Keep your heart close. Let them tape the heart onto the card and take it home. Encourage them to place it on the fridge or by their bed so they can remember to keep God’s words in their hearts.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter presents a father’s loving instruction to his children, urging them to pursue wisdom above everything else. Wisdom in Proverbs is more than knowledge. It is a way of living that follows God’s ways, and it leads to a full and blessed life. The contrast between the path of the righteous and the path of the wicked reminds us that every daily choice shapes the direction of our lives.

When teaching children, avoid promising that following God will always make life easy or free of trouble. Proverbs speaks in general terms about how wisdom usually leads to good outcomes, and children should understand that God’s faithfulness is about his love and guidance, not a guarantee of a problem-free life.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank you for giving us your wisdom. Help us to listen to your words and keep them close to our hearts. Lead us on the bright path that gets brighter each day, and help us to stay steady and walk straight with you. Amen.
