BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

Proverbs 5:1 is a father’s call to his son to give close, careful attention to wisdom. The verse asks the young man to tune his ears to what his father has learned about living well, because understanding comes through listening before it comes through experience. The words are spoken by a parent to a child, and the book of Proverbs presents them as the voice of a wise teacher passing on hard-won counsel.

My son, pay attention to my wisdom. Turn your ear to my understanding…

What Proverbs 5:1 Means

The verse opens with “My son,” which signals a relationship of care and instruction rather than a cold command. The phrase “pay attention to my wisdom” asks the son to notice and weigh what is being said, to treat it as valuable rather than passing noise. Wisdom in Proverbs is not mainly clever ideas. It is skill for living, the ability to act rightly in ordinary choices about speech, money, work, friendship and desire.

The second line uses an image of the body: “turn your ear to my understanding.” To turn an ear is to lean in, the way a person bends toward someone speaking softly across a table. The verse teaches that understanding is received by deliberate effort. It does not promise that the son will instantly grasp everything, or that obedience will be easy. It describes the posture that makes growth possible.

The Context of Proverbs 5:1

The book of Proverbs is a collection of sayings traditionally attributed to Solomon, with several other contributors named within it. Its audience is a young person facing a world full of tempting paths, and the instruction is framed as a father speaking to his son. Chapter 5 turns to a specific danger, the seductive woman whose words seem sweet but lead to ruin. The opening verses of the chapter set the tone: listen carefully, because appealing things can be dangerous.

The verses that follow in Proverbs 5:2-4 explain why this attention matters. The verse under study is the summons that gives the teaching its purpose, so reading it alongside what comes next shows that paying attention is a protection. Wisdom is presented as the thing that keeps a person’s lips and judgment sound when pleasant speech is trying to lead them astray.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 5:1

Proverbs 4:20-23

20 My son, attend to my words. Turn your ear to my sayings. 21 Let them not depart from your eyes. Keep them in the center of your heart. 22 For they are life to those who find them, and health to their whole body. 23 Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life.

This passage uses the same language of listening and keeping wisdom close to the heart. It shows that attention to instruction guards the whole life, which deepens the call of Proverbs 5:1.

James 1:19

So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger…

(WEB)

James urges believers to be quick to hear and slow to speak. His counsel echoes the posture the father asks of his son, showing that receptive listening remains central to a life of wisdom in the New Testament.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 5:1

Father, you have given us wisdom through the faithful voices in our lives and through your own word. Help me to pay attention when I am tempted to rush ahead or to tune out what I need to hear. Open my ears and my heart so that understanding takes root in me. Guard my lips and my choices, and lead me away from what looks sweet but leads to harm. Teach me to listen well, for your glory and my good. Amen.
