Proverbs 5:20 is a warning against being drawn into an affair, which the verse calls the embrace of “an adulteress” or “another” man’s wife. A father speaks here to his son, asking why he would let his heart be captured by someone outside his own marriage when he could find satisfaction and delight at home. The question is pointed and personal, meant to make the young man stop and think about where his desires are leading him.

For why should you, my son, be captivated with an adulteress? Why embrace the bosom of another?

What Proverbs 5:20 Means

The verse opens with “For why should you, my son,” which turns the proverb into a direct, almost pleading appeal from a parent to a child. The word “captivated” pictures desire that has taken over the mind, the way a person can be pulled along by an attraction they no longer control. The father is not describing a passing glance but a fixation that holds a man in place.

The second question, “Why embrace the bosom of another?”, uses the language of intimacy to name what the affair actually is. It is not a small slip but a betrayal of a shared and exclusive closeness that belongs to a marriage. The verse asks the reader to see the cost clearly before the desire grows any stronger.

What the verse does not do is promise that temptation will vanish or that every struggle will end in an instant. It is a wisdom saying, a general truth about how such desires work and where they lead. It calls for a choice of direction rather than offering a guarantee about how easily that choice will be made.

The Context of Proverbs 5:20

Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings traditionally attributed to Solomon, and it is framed as a father’s instruction to his son. Chapters 1 to 9 in particular speak to a young man on the edge of adult life, warning him about the paths that look appealing but end in ruin. Chapter 5 belongs to that instruction, so the verse is part of a conversation between a parent who cares deeply and a son who needs to hear the truth.

The verses just before and after make the meaning plainer. Verses 17 to 19 speak of a man rejoicing in “the wife of your youth” and of being satisfied and captivated by her love, which is the very thing Proverbs 5:20 contrasts with the outside woman. Verses 21 to 23 add that God sees all of a person’s paths, and that sin becomes a snare that holds the wicked fast. Read in this setting, the verse is less a rule about one behavior and more a call to find lasting joy in faithfulness, while recognizing that the Lord is watching and that folly leads to loss.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 5:20

This verse, in the same passage, celebrates the wife of one’s youth as the source of blessing and joy. It shows the positive side of the warning in Proverbs 5:20, pointing to the good that faithfulness protects and nourishes.

Matthew 5:28

But I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.

Jesus speaks here of lust that begins in the heart before it becomes an action. His teaching deepens the warning of Proverbs 5:20 by showing that guarding the inner life is part of faithfulness.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 5:20

Lord, you see every path I walk, and you know the desires that pull at my heart. Where I have begun to be captivated by what I should not pursue, show me clearly and give me the courage to turn away. Let my joy be found in the faithfulness you have given me, and let me love well in the place you have set me. Guard my heart and my steps, and keep me close to you. Amen.
