Proverbs 5:22 teaches that sin does not just happen once and disappear. It gathers around a person’s life, and the habits and choices that seemed harmless begin to bind them more tightly over time. The verse was written by Solomon, traditionally identified as the author of much of Proverbs, and it is addressed to a young man who is being tempted toward sexual sin and the seductions of a foolish woman. Solomon is speaking as a father to his son.

The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare him. The cords of his sin hold him firmly.

What Proverbs 5:22 Means

The verse begins with “the evil deeds of the wicked.” Solomon is describing a pattern: wrongdoing rarely stays a single act. Each wrong choice tends to draw a person into the next, the way a fishing net pulls closer the more the fish struggles. The word “ensnare” is the language of a trap, and it reminds the reader that the wicked person is often caught by his own doing before anyone else takes action against him.

The second line uses the picture of “cords,” the ropes or bands used to bind something tightly. Sin is pictured as something that holds a person firmly, making it hard to step away. The verse is not promising that a wicked person will be caught in every case, and it does not describe the exact timing of consequences. It is a wise observation about how sin works in human life, and it warns the reader to take that danger seriously before the cords tighten.

The Context of Proverbs 5:22

Proverbs is a collection of wisdom sayings meant to form character and teach a young person how to live well before God. Chapters 1 through 9 are framed as a father’s instruction to his son, and chapter 5 contains a warning against adultery in particular. The verses just before verse 22 describe the joy of faithful love within marriage and ask why a young man would be captivated by another woman. The verse just after, verse 23, says that the one who refuses instruction will die and wander in his folly.

Read in that setting, Proverbs 5:22 is part of a single argument. Verse 21 reminds the reader that the LORD sees every path a person takes, and verse 22 explains what happens along those paths when a person turns toward wickedness. The verse is less a standalone threat and more a father showing his son why the small temptations of the moment carry long consequences.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 5:22

Proverbs 4:23

Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life.

(WEB)

This verse urges the reader to guard the heart because the course of life flows from it. It pairs well with Proverbs 5:22 by showing that the traps of sin begin in the inner life long before the outward act is taken.

Romans 6:16

Don’t you know that when you present yourselves as servants and obey someone, you are the servants of whomever you obey; whether of sin to death, or of obedience to righteousness?

(WEB)

Paul explains that whoever a person presents himself to as a slave becomes that master’s slave. This connects with the idea of sin’s cords by showing how yielding to sin gradually shapes a person’s allegiance and freedom.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 5:22

Lord, you see every path I take, and you know the places where I am tempted to wander. Help me to notice the small choices that could draw me into wrongdoing before they become cords that hold me. Give me a heart that loves what is faithful and true, and give me the courage to step back when I feel the pull of a trap. Keep me close to you and teach me to walk in wisdom each day. Amen.
