BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

Proverbs 5:7 is a father’s direct appeal to his sons to pay close attention to his teaching and not wander away from it. It is a call to listen and stay faithful to wise words, especially when temptation makes wandering look attractive. The verse is spoken by a father, speaking to his sons, in the opening chapters of the book of Proverbs, where wisdom is presented as a parent’s gift to the next generation.

Now therefore, my sons, listen to me. Don’t depart from the words of my mouth.

What Proverbs 5:7 Means

The verse begins with “Now therefore,” which signals a conclusion drawn from what has just been described. The father has been warning about a seductive woman whose words seem sweet but whose end is bitter. Because of that danger, he says, “therefore” the sons should do something: listen. The word “listen” in Hebrew carries the sense of hearing that leads to obedience, not just noticing sounds.

The second half, “don’t depart from the words of my mouth,” uses the image of stepping away from a path. Wisdom is pictured as a road, and the father is asking his sons to stay on it rather than drifting off toward a side route that looks easier. The verse does not promise that obeying will remove every hardship, but it presents faithfulness to wise counsel as the safer and wiser course, one that protects a person from ruin.

The Context of Proverbs 5:7

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings traditionally attributed to Solomon, with chapter 5 framed as a father speaking to his son. Its purpose is to teach young people how to live skillfully before God, and it does so by contrasting the path of wisdom with the path of folly. The audience is the younger generation, though the teaching is meant for anyone who wants to live well.

The verses just before verse 7 describe the end of the adulterous woman’s path, which leads toward death and Sheol, the realm of the dead. Verses 8 through 10 then give practical instructions to stay far away from her house and to avoid losing one’s honor, strength, and wealth. Read in this setting, verse 7 is the hinge of the passage: because the danger is real, the father’s command to listen becomes urgent and concrete.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 5:7

Proverbs 1:8

My son, listen to your father’s instruction, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching…

(WEB)

This verse opens the book with a similar call, urging a son to hear his father’s instruction and not forsake his mother’s teaching. It shows that the appeal to listen is the foundation of the whole collection, not an isolated command.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

6 These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart; 7 and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.

These verses describe God’s words being kept in the heart and taught diligently to children. They reveal the deeper source behind a parent’s counsel and why faithful listening across generations matters.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 5:7

Lord, you have given wise words to guide my steps, and I confess that I am often tempted to drift from them when the wrong path looks appealing. Help me to listen closely, not only with my ears but with a heart that is willing to change. Keep me from small departures that slowly carry me away from you, and give me the courage to return whenever I notice I have wandered. Teach me to treasure your instruction more than any pleasure that promises much and delivers harm. Amen.
