BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

Proverbs 5:7 is a father’s direct appeal to his sons to pay attention and not drift away from what he has taught them. The verse calls the listener to stay loyal to wise instruction, especially when a more tempting path is calling for their attention. The speaker is a parent addressing his children in the opening section of the book of Proverbs, which is traditionally attributed to Solomon.

Now therefore, my sons, listen to me. Don’t depart from the words of my mouth.

What Proverbs 5:7 Means

The verse opens with “Now therefore,” which signals that the father is drawing a conclusion from what he has just described. In the verses before, he warned about a seductive woman whose words seem sweet but whose end is bitter and deadly. Because of that danger, he now asks his sons to lean in and listen to him rather than to the voice that flatters.

The phrase “my sons” makes the appeal personal. He is not lecturing strangers. He is speaking as a father who loves his children and knows what is at stake. The request to “listen to me” is about attention and obedience, and the second clause, “Don’t depart from the words of my mouth,” asks them to stay near his teaching and not wander away from it.

The verse does not promise that obeying will make life easy or that temptation will vanish. It simply names the wise response: keep close to sound instruction. The promise lies in the wisdom the father is offering, not in a guarantee of comfort.

The Context of Proverbs 5:7

The book of Proverbs is a collection of short sayings and longer instructions meant to shape character and daily judgment. It is written in the form of a father’s counsel to a son, and its wider purpose is to teach the young how to live wisely before God. Chapter 5 belongs to a section that repeatedly warns against sexual immorality and the folly that leads to ruin.

Just before verse 7, verses 4 through 6 describe the destructive end of the path being warned against: bitterness, death, and a way of life that the person does not even recognize as crooked. Verses 8 through 10 then tell the listeners to keep far from that danger and not give their honor, years, or wealth to others. Read in this setting, verse 7 is the hinge that moves from the warning to the instruction, so the call to listen carries the weight of everything the father has just exposed.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 5:7

Proverbs 4:20-22

20 My son, attend to my words. Turn your ear to my sayings. 21 Let them not depart from your eyes. Keep them in the center of your heart. 22 For they are life to those who find them, and health to their whole body.

This passage is also a father’s appeal to pay attention to his words and keep them close to the heart. It shows that the call to listen in Proverbs 5:7 is part of a consistent theme running through the book, where wisdom is treated as life-giving and worth guarding.

James 1:22

But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves.

James urges believers to act on the word they hear rather than merely hearing it and forgetting. This connects naturally with Proverbs 5:7, because listening to wise instruction is meant to shape what a person actually does with their days.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 5:7

Lord, you have given us words that lead to life, and you know how easily our attention wanders toward things that promise pleasure and end in harm. Help us to listen closely when wisdom speaks, both through Scripture and through the faithful people you place around us. Give us the humility to receive correction and the steadiness to stay near the path you have shown us, even when another road looks more inviting.

Keep our hearts from drifting away from your truth, and root us in the instruction that leads to peace. Teach us to value what is good and to turn from what would quietly lead us astray. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
