Proverbs 5:8 tells you to keep well away from temptation, not just resist it once you are standing in front of it. The advice is to put real distance between yourself and the place, person or habit that pulls you toward moral failure. King Solomon, traditionally identified as the author of Proverbs, speaks these words as a father to his son, urging him to pay attention to the wisdom he is about to receive.

What Proverbs 5:8 Means

The verse begins with a command to “remove your way far from her.” The Hebrew image is of a traveler changing direction so that a dangerous road no longer runs past his door. The point is not to walk closer and then hope for the best. It is to choose a different route entirely, one that does not carry you near the thing that will hurt you.

The second line, “Don’t come near the door of her house,” makes the picture concrete. The door is the threshold, the place where a person decides whether to step in. Solomon is saying that the safest course is never to stand at that threshold at all. Many people assume they can flirt with a danger and walk away whenever they like. The verse suggests otherwise: the nearer you draw, the weaker your resolve becomes.

It is worth being clear about what the verse does not promise. It does not say that avoiding temptation will make life easy or that you will never feel drawn to what is wrong. It describes a wise strategy, one that works with the reality of human weakness rather than pretending it does not exist.

The Context of Proverbs 5:8

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings meant to shape how a young person lives in a complicated world. Chapters 1 through 9 are framed as a father speaking to his son, and they repeatedly warn against the seduction of a woman who offers pleasure that leads to ruin. In the passage around verse 8, the speaker describes her path as one that leads “straight to Sheol,” the realm of the dead, and the final verse of this section pictures a man groaning at the end of his life because he gave away his honor, his years and his resources.

Read in that setting, verse 8 is not a general rule about avoiding every social contact. It is a specific piece of counsel about an adulterous or exploitative relationship that promises pleasure but delivers destruction. The surrounding verses show the cost: lost honor, squandered wealth and bitter regret. Seeing that connection helps the reader understand why the instruction is so direct and why it asks for distance rather than debate.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 5:8

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Paul reminds believers that God provides a way out of temptation, which gives practical weight to Solomon’s call to create distance. Wisdom about avoiding danger is paired with confidence that God is faithful to help you endure and escape.

James 1:14-15

14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin; and the sin, when it is full grown, produces death.

(WEB)

James traces how desire, when given room to grow, eventually produces sin and then death. His description shows why Proverbs 5:8 is so urgent: keeping close to temptation allows the process to run its course.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 5:8

Lord, you know how easily I drift toward the things that hurt me when I tell myself I am strong enough to stay close. Give me the honesty to see the roads I keep walking and the courage to turn away from them. Help me put real distance between myself and the temptations that have been pulling at me, and give me wisdom to change my habits before I am standing at the door. Keep my heart steady and my steps pointed toward what is good. Amen.
