Proverbs 5:9 Explanation

Proverbs 5:9 warns a young man not to hand over his reputation, his strength, and the best years of his life to someone who will use him up and give nothing back in return. Solomon, traditionally identified as the author of the book, speaks here as a father to his sons, urging them to stay away from the seductive and destructive woman described in the verses just before it.

Lest you give your honor to others, and your years to the cruel one…

What Proverbs 5:9 Means

The phrase “give your honor to others” points to your good name, your dignity, and the trust people place in you. Solomon is saying that a single reckless relationship can cost you the respect you spent years building. The word “years” refers to your life itself, the time and vitality you have to invest in meaningful work, family, and faith. “The cruel one” describes someone who takes without caring about what it costs you, a person whose presence drains rather than builds.

The verse is a warning, not a promise. It does not say every mistake ends a life or that God withdraws from anyone who has stumbled. It describes a pattern that wisdom literature repeatedly observes: choices made in pursuit of a moment of pleasure often carry a long bill. Proverbs speaks in general truths, and this one asks you to see the likely consequences of a path before you walk it.

The Context of Proverbs 5:9

Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings meant to shape the character of the next generation. Chapters 1 through 9 are framed as a father’s instructions to his son, and chapter 5 is one of several sections warning against sexual immorality. The audience is young men entering adulthood, who are being taught that wisdom is a way of living, not merely a set of ideas.

The surrounding verses sharpen the warning. Verse 6 describes a woman who is careless about her own path, and verses 7 and 8 call the listener to pay attention and keep his distance. Verses 10 through 12 spell out the ruin that follows: wealth squandered, labor given to strangers, and eventual regret. Read in this setting, verse 9 is not a random list of losses but the middle of a careful argument that consequences are real and that foolishness has a cost.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 5:9

Lord, you know the places in my life where I have been tempted to trade what matters most for something that looks appealing for a moment. Give me the wisdom to see the true cost of each decision before I make it. Guard my good name, and help me use my days for what is good, faithful, and lasting. Keep me close to you, and help me choose the path that leads toward life. Amen.
