Proverbs 6:19 teaches that God strongly opposes two things: lying under oath in a legal setting, and stirring up quarrels that split people who should be united. The verse is part of a list of six things the LORD hates and a seventh that is an abomination to him. It was written by Solomon, the traditional author of the book of Proverbs, as fatherly instruction to a young man learning how to live wisely before God and his community.

A false witness who utters lies, and he who sows discord among brothers.

What Proverbs 6:19 Means

The phrase “a false witness who utters lies” points to someone who testifies falsely, most likely in a courtroom or a dispute where truth decides the outcome. A witness’s word can send an innocent person to punishment or steal someone’s property, so the verse treats dishonest testimony as a serious wrong against both the victim and the justice that God values. The word “utters” suggests the lie is spoken out loud, deliberately, rather than being a simple mistake.

The second half, “he who sows discord among brothers,” describes a person who plants suspicion, rumor, and rivalry between people who are meant to stand together. The image of sowing suggests deliberate planting that grows over time, so the damage is often slow and spreads far beyond the first conversation. The verse does not promise that every such person will be caught or punished right away. It simply shows what God hates and calls the reader to be a person who builds trust rather than tearing it down.

The Context of Proverbs 6:19

Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings meant to shape character and daily conduct, and chapter 6 opens with warnings about rash promises, laziness, and the destructive habits that lead a person into trouble. Verses 16 through 19 form a numbered list of things God detests, moving from pride and violence to scheming and then to false testimony and division. The list is built to show that sins of the tongue and sins that break community are as serious as bloodshed in God’s sight.

Verses 20 through 22 turn directly to the reader with the words “My son,” and urge him to keep his father’s commandment and his mother’s teaching close at all times. Because the warning about lies and discord sits just before this call to listen and remember, the verse reads as part of a larger picture of how a young person can avoid the path that God rejects. Seen this way, honesty and peacemaking are not just rules but parts of a wise and faithful life.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 6:19

Exodus 20:16

“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

(WEB)

This commandment forbids bearing false witness against your neighbor, and it shows that Proverbs 6:19 echoes a principle God gave to Israel in the law. Reading the two together reveals that honesty in testimony has been a concern of God’s people from the very beginning.

Romans 12:18

If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.

(WEB)

Paul’s words encourage believers to pursue peace with everyone as far as it depends on them. This connects directly to the call in Proverbs 6:19 to avoid sowing division and instead to work toward harmony among those around us.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 6:19

Lord, you see every word I speak and every seed I plant in the lives of others. Give me the courage to tell the truth even when a lie would be easier or would protect me. Guard my tongue from gossip and from stirring up quarrels that divide people I care about. Help me be someone who builds trust and peace, so that my words bring life rather than harm. Amen.
