Proverbs 6:24 teaches that God’s wisdom, expressed as his commands and correction, works like a protective light that keeps a person from sexual temptation and from the smooth words of someone who would lead them into sin. The verse is part of a father’s counsel to his son, found in the opening section of the book of Proverbs, traditionally attributed to Solomon. The son is being warned about a seductive woman whose flattery is a trap.

To keep you from the immoral woman, from the flattery of the wayward wife’s tongue.

What Proverbs 6:24 Means

The verse begins with its purpose: wisdom is given “to keep you” from danger. The word keep here means guard or preserve, as a watchman guards a city. The teacher is not describing a vague feeling of goodness but a practical shield that stands between the young man and a specific threat.

That threat is named in two ways. The first is the immoral woman, a phrase pointing to sexual immorality and to a life that abandons faithfulness. The second is the flattery of her tongue. The danger is not only her body but her speech, which is smooth, pleasing and designed to make a bad path look appealing. Many people fall into sin less through a single dramatic choice than through words that slowly soften their resolve.

The verse does not promise that a believer will never feel temptation, nor that prayer and Scripture remove every struggle. It describes what wisdom does: it equips a person to recognize flattery for what it is and to walk away. God’s guidance is presented as real protection, and the reader is invited to receive it rather than to trust their own sense of what sounds attractive.

The Context of Proverbs 6:24

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings, many framed as a parent speaking to a child. Its opening chapters urge the young to pursue understanding, and they repeatedly warn against companions and desires that lead to ruin. Verse 24 sits inside a passage that Christians have long read as a call to take God’s word seriously in the details of everyday life.

The verses just before and after make the point sharper. In verse 21 the father tells his son to bind the commandments on his heart and around his neck, and verse 23 calls the commandment a lamp and the teaching a light. Verses 25 through 27 then warn against lusting after the woman’s beauty and against her eyelids that captivate, comparing such a relationship to carrying fire in one’s lap. Read this way, verse 24 is the hinge: the light of wisdom is what keeps a person from being burned.

Key Phrases in Proverbs 6:24

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

This verse reminds believers that temptation is common to people and that God provides a way out. It pairs well with Proverbs 6:24 by showing that the protection wisdom offers is part of God’s faithful care, not a burden the believer must carry alone.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

James promises that God gives wisdom generously to those who ask. Read alongside Proverbs 6:24, it encourages the reader to seek the discernment needed to recognize flattery and walk in the way of life that the father describes.

A Short Prayer From Proverbs 6:24

Lord, you have given your word as a lamp for my feet and a light for my path. Guard my heart from flattery and from every voice that would lead me away from faithfulness to you. Give me discernment to hear what is true and courage to walk away from what is not. When my desires pull me toward what looks pleasing but leads to harm, remind me of your wisdom and keep me close to you. Amen.
