BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

Psalm 10:3 describes a person who takes pride in what his heart craves and who praises those who chase gain while treating God with contempt. The verse is a complaint, not a teaching for the godly to copy. The psalmist, speaking in the voice of the faithful, is describing how the wicked look and behave, and he is asking God why such things are allowed to continue.

For the wicked boasts of his heart’s cravings. He blesses the greedy, and condemns the LORD.

What Psalm 10:3 Means

The phrase “boasts of his heart’s cravings” pictures someone who is open about wanting more and proud of getting it. Desire itself is not the problem the psalmist names. The issue is that the person’s deepest longings have become the thing he celebrates, and he speaks of them as if they were achievements.

The second half turns the picture around. The greedy person is “blessed,” meaning people call him fortunate and he is treated as successful, while God is effectively set aside or insulted. The verse does not promise that wicked people will be punished on any particular schedule. It describes the injustice the psalmist sees and leaves the outcome in God’s hands, which is the reason the psalm is written as a prayer.

The Context of Psalm 10:3

Psalm 10 belongs to the book of Psalms, the Hebrew songbook that was used for prayer and worship in ancient Israel. Its author is not named in the heading, and it is often grouped with Psalm 9 in some ancient manuscripts, which suggests the two were once read together. The psalm is an individual lament that the community could also pray, and its audience is God himself.

The verses just before and after the focus verse show the setting clearly. Verse 1 opens with the question of why God seems far away in a time of trouble, and verse 2 describes the wicked hunting down the weak. Verses 4 through 6 go on to say the wicked person has no room for God in his thoughts and feels secure in his prosperity. Read in that setting, verse 3 is one piece of a larger portrait of arrogance, and the psalmist’s real concern is why God appears to stay silent.

Key Phrases in Psalm 10:3

Proverbs 15:27

He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house, but he who hates bribes will live.

(WEB)

This verse warns that a person eager for unjust gain brings trouble on his household, which echoes Psalm 10:3’s picture of greed. Reading the two together shows that the psalm’s concern is not only about the individual’s inner life but also about the harm that greed does to others.

1 Timothy 6:10

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some have been led astray from the faith in their greed, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

(WEB)

Paul explains that the love of money is a root of many evils, which helps explain why the psalmist ties boasting in cravings to a larger problem. This passage gives a New Testament perspective on the same danger that Psalm 10:3 describes in the language of prayer.

A Short Prayer From Psalm 10:3

Lord, you see the hearts of people more clearly than we see our own. Where my desires have grown louder than my love for you, show me the places I have been quietly boasting in what I want. Teach me to measure success by your standards and not by what the world applauds. When injustice seems to prosper and your name is pushed aside, help me to keep trusting that you are not far off. Give me a heart that honors you above every gain. Amen.
