BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

Revelation 1:5 describes Jesus Christ as the faithful witness who was raised from the dead and who rules over every earthly king. It also says he loves believers and has freed them from their sins by his own blood. John writes these words near the start of the book, in a letter greeting addressed to seven churches in the Roman province of Asia, in what is now western Turkey.

And from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us, and washed us from our sins by his blood…

What Revelation 1:5 Means

The verse begins by naming Jesus as “the faithful witness.” A witness is someone who tells the truth about what they have seen. Jesus is the one who perfectly reveals the Father, and he never failed to do so, even when it cost him everything. Next comes “the firstborn of the dead,” a title that means he is first in rank and first in victory over death, the one who opened the way for others to rise. Finally, he is called “the ruler of the kings of the earth,” which means no emperor or government stands above him, however powerful it may look.

The second half of the verse turns to what Jesus has done for his people. He loves them, and he has “washed” them from their sins by his blood. The image is of cleansing, not of a debt merely paid or a fine merely settled. The verse does not promise that believers will never struggle with sin or hardship. It does promise that their standing before God rests on what Christ has done, and that his love is the source of their freedom.

The Context of Revelation 1:5

The book of Revelation is traditionally attributed to the apostle John, who wrote while exiled on the island of Patmos, as the opening verses describe. Its first readers were Christians in seven real congregations facing social pressure and, in some cases, official hostility for refusing to worship the emperor. Verse 5 sits inside a greeting that blends the language of an ancient letter with a wider vision of God’s rule over history.

Just before the verse, John promises a blessing to anyone who reads and keeps the words of this prophecy. Just after it, he ends the greeting with a declaration of glory to Christ and points ahead to his coming with the clouds. Read this way, the description of Jesus as faithful witness and ruler of kings is not a distant theological idea. It is the encouragement that the churches need as they wait, under pressure, for the final vindication of the one they follow.

Key Phrases in Revelation 1:5

John 18:37

Pilate therefore said to him, “Are you a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this reason I have been born, and for this reason I have come into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”

In this verse Jesus tells Pilate that he came to bear witness to the truth. It shows the faithful witness of Revelation 1:5 standing before a ruler, testifying to the truth even when it leads to the cross.

1 Peter 1:18-19

18 Knowing that you were redeemed, not with corruptible things, with silver or gold, from the useless way of life handed down from your fathers, 19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb without blemish or spot, the blood of Christ…

Peter explains that believers were redeemed not with perishable things but with the precious blood of Christ. It deepens the picture of cleansing and sacrifice that Revelation 1:5 presents in the language of washing from sin.

A Short Prayer From Revelation 1:5

Lord Jesus, you are the faithful witness, and you never told a lie or turned away from the truth. Help me to trust your faithfulness when honesty feels costly. Remind me that you are the firstborn from the dead, and that the grave does not have the last word over those who belong to you. Thank you that you love me and have washed me from my sins by your own blood. Let that love shape how I speak, how I forgive, and how I live today. Amen.
