Revelation 4:11 Context: Why God Alone Is Worthy of Worship

By
Elizabeth Kim

Revelation 4:11 is a declaration that God alone deserves glory, honor, and power because he is the Creator of all things, and everything that exists came into being by his will. The verse is spoken by the twenty-four elders, who fall before the throne of God and cast their crowns down in worship. They speak to God himself, the one seated on the throne at the center of heaven’s worship scene.

“Worthy are you, our Lord and God, the Holy One, to receive the glory, the honor, and the power, for you created all things, and because of your desire they existed, and were created!”

What Revelation 4:11 Means

The elders begin by calling God “worthy,” meaning he is the one who rightly deserves the response they are giving. They then name three things he receives: glory, which is the weight and brightness of who he is; honor, which is the respect and recognition due to him; and power, which is his authority to rule and act. The reason given is simple and sweeping: “you created all things.” Everything in the universe owes its existence to him.

The verse also says that all things “existed, and were created” because of God’s desire, or will. This is not a random cosmos but a purposeful one, brought into being by a God who chose to make it. The verse does not promise the reader a particular outcome in daily life. Its aim is to set God’s worth and sovereignty in view, so that worship rests on who he is and what he has done, not on what he might give in return.

The Context of Revelation 4:11

The book of Revelation was written by a man named John, traditionally identified as the apostle, while he was exiled on the island of Patmos, and it was addressed to seven churches in the Roman province of Asia. Its language is apocalyptic, full of vivid visions, symbols, and heavenly scenes meant to strengthen believers who faced pressure to bow to earthly powers. Chapter 4 opens a new section in which John is taken up to heaven and shown the throne room of God, and the praise of heaven becomes the lens through which the rest of the book should be read.

Just before verse 11, the four living creatures cry out that God is holy, holy, holy, the Almighty who was, is, and is to come. When they give glory and thanks, the twenty-four elders respond by falling down and laying their crowns before the throne. The worship is a chain of response, with each heavenly voice acknowledging the one above all. Read in that setting, verse 11 is not a quiet personal sentiment but the climax of a worship scene that makes clear the whole story belongs to God.

Key Phrases in Revelation 4:11

Psalm 19:1

The heavens declare the glory of God. The expanse shows his handiwork.

(WEB)

This psalm pictures the heavens declaring God’s glory, which echoes the elders’ focus on his glory and the reality of creation pointing back to its Maker.

Colossians 1:16

For by him all things were created, in the heavens and on the earth, things visible and things invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things have been created through him, and for him.

(WEB)

Paul writes that all things were created through and for Christ, extending the theme of God as Creator to show that the one worthy of worship is the same one revealed in Jesus.

A Short Prayer From Revelation 4:11

Lord God, you are worthy of glory, honor, and power, and I bow before you today as the Creator of all things. Everything I see and everything I depend on came into being by your will, and I confess how easily I forget that. Teach me to order my thoughts, my choices, and my plans around who you are rather than around what I can gain. Let my worship be honest and steady, even when my heart feels scattered. Amen.
