Revelation 5:13 Explained

By
Elizabeth Garcia

Revelation 5:13 describes a worldwide chorus of praise. John sees every created thing in heaven, on the earth, under the earth, and in the sea joining in worship, directing their praise to God who sits on the throne and to the Lamb, Jesus Christ. The words are spoken by the created world itself, heard by John in a vision.

I heard every created thing which is in heaven, on the earth, under the earth, on the sea, and everything in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb be the blessing, the honor, the glory, and the dominion, forever and ever! Amen!”

What Revelation 5:13 Means

The verse begins with the phrase “every created thing,” which is a deliberately wide net. John lists the places a reader would think of as the whole of existence: heaven above, the land, the realm beneath the earth, and the sea with all its creatures. The point is that nothing in creation is left out of the worship. Every corner of the universe is pictured as turning toward God at once.

The praise itself is a blessing, honor, glory, and dominion given to “him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” Those four words are not a list of random compliments. They describe the proper response of a creature to its Creator and Redeemer: acknowledging that God is good, that he deserves respect, that his greatness shows itself, and that he rules. The verse closes with “forever and ever,” signaling that this worship never runs out.

What the verse does not do is describe a moment you must produce on your own schedule or feel in your emotions. It is a vision of how things already stand before God. It promises that the praise of creation is coming, and it invites you to join that praise now, without claiming to explain every detail of how or when it will be fully realized.

The Context of Revelation 5:13

The book of Revelation is traditionally attributed to the apostle John, who writes from exile on the island of Patmos. It is addressed to seven churches in the Roman province of Asia, Christians living under pressure from a culture that demanded loyalty to the emperor and his gods. The book is written in dramatic, symbolic language meant to strengthen those believers and show them who truly holds the throne.

Just before verse 13, John hears the angels and living creatures declare that the slain Lamb is worthy to receive power, wealth, wisdom, and glory. Verse 13 then widens the circle until every creature joins in, and verse 14 ends the scene with the four living creatures saying “Amen” and the elders falling down in worship. Read in that sequence, verse 13 is the climax of a growing wave of praise, and it shows that the Lamb’s worthiness is recognized by all creation, not just a select group.

Key Phrases in Revelation 5:13

Psalm 148:1-5

1 Praise Yah! Praise the LORD from the heavens! Praise him in the heights! 2 Praise him, all his angels! Praise him, all his army! 3 Praise him, sun and moon! Praise him, all you shining stars! 4 Praise him, you heavens of heavens, You waters that are above the heavens. 5 Let them praise the LORD’s name, For he commanded, and they were created.

This psalm calls the heavens, the angels, the sun and moon, and the waters above to praise the Lord. It shows the same vision of creation joined in worship that Revelation 5:13 presents, and it roots that praise in God’s command and his creative power.

Philippians 2:9-11

9 Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave to him the name which is above every name; 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Paul writes that God exalted Jesus and that every knee will bow and every tongue confess him as Lord. The passage echoes the universal scope of Revelation 5:13 and connects the honor given to the Lamb with the humility of Christ himself.

A Short Prayer From Revelation 5:13

Lord God, you sit on the throne, and your reign reaches farther than I can imagine. Every created thing praises you, and today I want to join that praise with my own voice, even in the ordinary moments when my heart feels quiet. Give me a clear sense of your worthiness, and help me trust your dominion over the decisions and relationships I carry. Teach me to honor the Lamb in how I live, so that my small life becomes one more note in the song that never ends. Amen.
