Romans 5:2 teaches that Christians have been brought into a place of undeserved favor with God through faith in Jesus, and that this standing gives them a reason to rejoice in the hope of sharing God’s glory. The verse is part of a letter the apostle Paul wrote to the church in Rome, a mixed community of Jewish and Gentile believers, around the middle of the first century. Paul is explaining what changes once a person is made right with God.

Through whom we also have our access by faith into this grace in which we stand. We rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

What Romans 5:2 Means

Paul begins with access. The word “access” pictures someone being welcomed into a room, the way a guest is led into the presence of a king. The access comes “through” Jesus, not through a person’s own record or effort. It is received “by faith,” which means trusting what God has done rather than earning it. The “grace in which we stand” describes the settled position believers now occupy: they are not hovering on the edge of God’s favor, hoping to be accepted, but standing firmly inside it.

The second half moves from position to response. Because of that standing, believers “rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” Here “hope” is not wishful thinking. In Paul’s usage it is confident expectation about something God has promised, namely that those who belong to Christ will one day share in the fullness of God’s glory. The rejoicing is present, even while the hope points forward.

What the verse does not promise is an easy life. It does not say believers will feel joyful every day, or that trouble will be absent. The rejoicing it describes rests on a fixed reality, a secure relationship with God, and that reality holds steady when circumstances do not.

The Context of Romans 5:2

Romans 5 opens with the conclusion Paul has just argued for across the first four chapters: “Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Verse 2 unpacks what that peace makes possible. Because the verse follows directly on the word “justified,” it reads as a description of the life that flows from being declared right with God, not as a separate idea.

The verses after it carry the same thread forward. In verses 3 to 5 Paul moves from rejoicing in hope to rejoicing in suffering, tracing a path from suffering to perseverance, from perseverance to proven character, and from character to hope that does not disappoint. Seeing verse 2 in that sequence shows that the hope it mentions is tested and strengthened over time, not kept alive by optimism alone.

Key Phrases in Romans 5:2

Ephesians 2:8

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God…

(WEB)

This verse states plainly that salvation comes by grace through faith and is not earned by works. It fills out the “access by faith” in Romans 5:2 by showing that the faith which opens the door is itself a gift from God, which is why the standing it brings is secure.

Romans 8:18

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which will be revealed toward us.

(WEB)

Here Paul compares present suffering with the glory that will be revealed. It develops the hope mentioned in Romans 5:2, showing that the glory believers look forward to is worth more than anything they endure now, and so their rejoicing can persist through hardship.

A Short Prayer From Romans 5:2

Father, thank you that through Jesus I have been brought into your grace and can stand here without fear of being sent away. I confess that I often try to earn your favor or feel I must prove myself before you. Help me trust the access you have given me by faith. Let my rejoicing rest on the hope of your glory, especially on the days when my circumstances give me little reason to smile. Strengthen that hope in me, and let it steady my heart today. Amen.
