BIBLEREADER // ELIZABETH KIM

Ruth 3:6 records a simple act of obedience. Ruth goes to the threshing floor at night and does exactly what her mother-in-law Naomi has told her to do, following a bold plan that carries real risk and real hope. The verse is narrated by the book’s author, so Ruth is the one acting and Naomi is the one whose counsel she follows.

She went down to the threshing floor, and did everything that her mother-in-law told her.

What Ruth 3:6 Means

The verse is short, and most of its weight sits in the phrase “did everything.” Ruth does not pick and choose the parts of Naomi’s instructions she finds comfortable. She washes, dresses, goes down to the threshing floor, waits for Boaz to finish eating and drinking, and then does what Naomi said to do. The verse shows a woman who has decided to trust a plan she cannot fully see the end of.

What the verse does not do is promise that the plan will work or that Ruth’s courage will be rewarded in any particular way. It describes an act, not a guarantee. The outcome of the story unfolds in the verses that follow, and it depends on Boaz’s response and on God’s faithfulness over time. Ruth 3:6 simply reports that she went, and that she went all the way through what she was asked to do.

The Context of Ruth 3:6

The book of Ruth is traditionally attributed to an unnamed author, often thought to have written it in Israel during or after the period of the judges, and it was likely written for an Israelite audience who valued the law of the kinsman-redeemer. The story centers on Naomi, a widow who has returned to Bethlehem from Moab with Ruth, a Moabite widow who has chosen to attach herself to Naomi and her God.

Just before verse 6, Naomi lays out a bold plan: Ruth is to go to the threshing floor when Boaz is resting after the harvest and to uncover his feet, which is a request that he act as her near kinsman. Reading the verse against that backdrop shows that Ruth’s obedience is not passive. She is stepping into a situation that could be misunderstood or dangerous, trusting Naomi’s wisdom and the hope that Boaz will respond honorably.

Key Phrases in Ruth 3:6

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

These verses call believers to trust the Lord with all their heart and not to lean entirely on their own understanding. Ruth’s willingness to follow Naomi’s plan, though she could not see the full outcome, reflects this same posture of trust in God’s guidance working through the people He places around us.

Ruth 2:12

May the LORD repay your work, and a full reward be given to you from the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”

(WEB)

Earlier in the book, Boaz blesses Ruth for her kindness to Naomi and prays that she will be richly rewarded under the wings of the God of Israel. This verse shows that Ruth’s faithfulness has already been noticed and honored, which helps explain why she can step forward with confidence in the events that follow.

A Short Prayer From Ruth 3:6

Lord, you see the places where I am tempted to hold back or to trust only what I can control. Give me the humility to listen to wise counsel and the courage to follow through with faithfulness, even when the path feels uncertain. Help me to act with integrity and kindness, trusting that you are at work in the details of my life. Thank you that you are faithful to those who take steps of trust in you. Amen.
