BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

This list gives you Bible verses about discernment, the God-given ability to tell what is true, good and wise from what only looks that way. It is for anyone facing a decision, a conversation, a temptation or a moment when the right path is hard to see. Most of these passages share one conviction: wisdom is a gift we ask for, and it grows through prayer, Scripture and a willingness to be corrected.

Verses for Asking God for Wisdom

Discernment begins with admitting we do not have enough understanding on our own. These verses invite you to ask openly and expect God to answer generously.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

When you feel unsure which choice to make, this verse reminds you that wisdom is not something you must earn before you ask. Before you open your email or sit down to decide, pause and name the specific question you are facing, then ask God for wisdom in those exact words.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Leaning on your own understanding is tempting when a decision feels urgent. Write this passage on an index card and place it where you will see it during the day, so that you remember to bring your reasoning to God before you act on it.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

This verse presents God as a guide who instructs and watches over His people. When you are unsure of the next step, try asking God to show you one thing today, and then notice what doors, people and Scriptures keep returning to your attention.

Verses for Testing What You Hear and See

Discernment also means evaluating teaching, opinions and influences. These passages encourage careful testing rather than quick acceptance of whatever sounds appealing.

1 John 4:1

Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

(WEB)

Not every voice that speaks with confidence speaks the truth. Before you share an article, repeat a claim or follow a teacher, ask whether it lines up with what you know of Christ and the Scriptures, and take time to test it before accepting it.

1 Thessalonians 5:21

Test all things, and hold firmly that which is good.

(WEB)

Paul instructs believers to examine everything and hold fast to what is good. In practice this means listening carefully, asking questions and keeping what proves true while setting aside what does not, rather than rejecting everything or accepting everything.

Acts 17:11

Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.

(WEB)

The Bereans were praised for checking Paul’s preaching against the Scriptures themselves. The next time you hear a sermon or a claim, open your Bible and read the passage it mentions, so that your confidence rests on the text rather than on the speaker’s tone.

Verses for Choosing the Right Path

Many of life’s decisions have no obvious answer. These verses point to a steady heart, patient waiting and the peace that God gives as His guidance settles in.

Philippians 1:9-10

9 This I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment; 10 so that you may approve the things that are excellent; that you may be sincere and without offense to the day of Christ…

(WEB)

Paul prays that love would grow in knowledge and insight so that believers can discern what is best. Pray this for yourself and for someone close to you who is making a hard choice, asking that love and clear thinking would grow together.

Colossians 3:15

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

(WEB)

The peace of Christ is meant to act as an umpire in the heart. When you are torn between two options, notice which one leaves you with a settled, grounded peace, and bring that observation to God in prayer.

Romans 12:2

Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

(WEB)

Renewing your mind is the path to discerning God’s will, which is good, pleasing and perfect. Each morning, read a short passage of Scripture before you check the news, so that your thoughts are shaped by God’s word before the world shapes them.

Verses for Living Wisely Day by Day

Discernment is not only for big decisions. These verses describe how wisdom shows up in ordinary speech, relationships and daily habits.

Proverbs 2:6

For the LORD gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.

(WEB)

This verse says that the Lord gives wisdom and that knowledge and understanding come from His mouth. Treat your daily reading as an act of receiving, and expect that what you learn in Scripture will shape how you respond at work and at home.

Hebrews 5:14

But solid food is for those who are full grown, who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil.

(WEB)

The writer speaks of mature believers whose senses are trained to distinguish good from evil. Training takes repetition, so choose one small habit, such as praying before replying to a difficult message, and practice it until it becomes instinctive.

Ephesians 5:15-17

15 Therefore watch carefully how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise; 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore don’t be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

(WEB)

Paul urges believers to walk carefully, making the most of the time and understanding what the Lord’s will is. At the start of each week, look at your calendar and ask God which commitments match His priorities and which need to be released.

Proverbs 4:7

Wisdom is supreme. Get wisdom. Yes, though it costs all your possessions, get understanding.

(WEB)

Wisdom is declared to be the principal thing, so get wisdom, and with all your getting, get understanding. Choose one book, sermon or mentor this month that will help you grow in understanding, and make time for it as seriously as you would any appointment.

How to Use These Verses

Write three or four of these verses in a notebook or on your phone’s notes app, grouped by the situations that matter most to you right now. Read them before meetings, before difficult conversations and before any decision you have been postponing, reading each one slowly enough to hear it rather than just scan it.

Pray the verses back to God in your own words. Turn Proverbs 3:5-6 into a request such as “Lord, I do not want to trust my own reasoning here alone,” and then wait quietly for a few minutes, noticing what comes to mind. Return to the same passages over several weeks, because discernment often develops slowly through repeated attention.

A Short Prayer for Discernment

Lord, I confess that I often want quick answers and clear signs before I am willing to trust You. Give me wisdom in the decisions I face today, and help me to test what I hear against Your word rather than against my fears or my preferences. Quiet the voices that pull me away from You, and let Your peace settle my heart where I am uncertain. Teach me to notice Your guidance in ordinary moments, and make me willing to act on it even when the path is not fully visible. Thank You for being a God who gives wisdom generously. Amen.
