BIBLEREADER // ISABELLA WALKER

This list gives you Scripture passages about discipleship, the everyday work of following Jesus, learning from him, and letting his way shape ordinary decisions. It is written for Christians who want practical verses to read, remember, and carry into their week. Each passage speaks to a different stage of the walk, from first commitment to the long, quiet faithfulness that follows.

What these verses share is a picture of a person who stays close to Jesus. Discipleship in Scripture is never a one-time event. It involves listening, obeying, denying self, and trusting God when the path is unclear.

Verses for Beginning to Follow Jesus

Every disciple starts with a call. These passages describe what it means to hear Jesus invite you into his company and to answer with a real change of direction.

Matthew 4:19

He said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers for men.”

(WEB)

Jesus speaks these words to fishermen who are simply doing their work. Today, try naming one ordinary task you do this week, such as answering email or driving the kids to practice, and asking Jesus how he might want you to follow him in it.

Luke 9:23

He said to all, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

(WEB)

This verse makes following Jesus a daily matter rather than a single decision. Choose one small habit you would like to surrender this week, perhaps a grudge or a late-night scroll, and offer it to him each morning before you start your day.

John 8:31-32

31 Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him, “If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples. 32 You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

(WEB)

Jesus ties discipleship to remaining in his word, not just hearing it once. Set aside ten minutes each day to read a passage slowly, and when a line stands out, write it on a card to keep with you.

Verses for Obedience in Ordinary Days

Discipleship shows itself in what we do when no one is watching. These verses connect faith with everyday choices at work, at home, and in our conversations.

John 14:15

If you love me, keep my commandments.

(WEB)

Jesus links love for him with keeping his commands, which makes obedience an expression of relationship rather than a checklist. When you face a small decision this week, pause and ask whether it reflects the love you say you have for him.

James 1:22

But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves.

(WEB)

James warns against hearing God’s word and forgetting it. After you read Scripture, choose one specific action you will take that day, and write it down so you can return to it in the evening.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Paul asks believers to work as if serving the Lord himself, which turns routine labor into a place of worship. Before you begin a task you find tedious, say a short prayer asking God to make your effort honest and careful.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

This verse summarizes God’s requirements in three simple phrases: justice, mercy, and humble walking. Pick one of these three and look for one chance to practice it with a person you meet today.

Verses for Perseverance When the Road Is Hard

Following Jesus is not always encouraging or easy. These passages speak to the weariness that comes when faithfulness costs something and progress feels slow.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Paul reminds believers not to grow weary in doing good, since a harvest will come in its season. If you feel tired of showing up for a particular commitment, write down one reason you started and read it aloud when discouragement returns.

Hebrews 12:1-2

1 Therefore let us also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

(WEB)

The writer points us to Jesus as the one who runs ahead of us in faith. Name one weight that slows you down, such as worry or comparison, and ask God to help you set it aside before your next step.

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

Paul expresses confidence that God will finish the good work he has begun. When you look at your own growth and see only gaps, remind yourself that the work belongs to God, and thank him for what he has already done.

Romans 8:28

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

(WEB)

Paul affirms that God works through all things for the good of those who love him. Think of a hard season you are in now and ask God to show you one way he might be shaping you through it.

How to Use These Verses

Choose two or three verses from this list that speak to where you are right now. Write them on index cards or in the notes app on your phone, and place them where you will see them, such as near the coffee maker, on the bathroom mirror, or on your car dashboard. Reading them in short moments throughout the day keeps them close when life gets busy.

Pray through each verse rather than simply reading it. Ask God what the passage says about your next step, thank him for one thing it reveals about his character, and then wait quietly for a moment before moving on. Revisit the same verses over several weeks, since discipleship grows through repetition as much as through insight.

A Short Prayer for Discipleship

Lord Jesus, you called ordinary people to leave their nets and follow you, and I want to answer that same call in my own life. Teach me to listen for your voice in the middle of my routines, and give me the courage to obey even when the step is small or inconvenient. When I grow tired or discouraged, remind me that you are faithful to finish the work you have begun in me. Shape my heart to look more like yours each day, and let my life point others toward you. Amen.
