This page gives you Scripture for fresh starts, whether you are beginning a new season, leaving a failure behind, or simply need to hear that yesterday does not have to decide today. It is written for anyone who wants God’s word close at hand when they are trying to begin again. These verses share a common thread: God makes new things, forgives what is past, and meets people in the middle of their ordinary mornings.

Verses for Turning Away from Yesterday

Some fresh starts begin with letting go of what has already happened. The verses in this group speak to regret, old mistakes and the quiet pull to keep returning to the past. They remind you that God is doing something new, even when you cannot yet see the path ahead.

Isaiah 43:18-19

18 “Don’t remember the former things, and don’t consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

(WEB)

God tells the people not to dwell on former things because he is already at work. Try writing one past failure on a card, then setting it aside in a drawer. When the memory returns today, touch the drawer and say, “God is doing something new here.”

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.

(WEB)

Paul says that anyone in Christ is a new creation, and the old has passed away. Before you go to bed, name one habit or fear you want to leave behind. Give it to God in one sentence, and let that be the end of it for the night.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Jeremiah writes these words from the ruins of Jerusalem, which is remarkable. God’s mercies are described as new every morning. Tomorrow, when you wake, speak these words aloud before you check your phone, so the first thing you hear is God’s faithfulness.

Verses for a Hard Morning or a Difficult Start

Starting again can feel most difficult at the very beginning, when the day looks heavy and your strength is thin. These verses meet you at that threshold and give courage for the first steps, whether you are facing a new job, a new routine or a hard conversation.

Psalm 30:5

For his anger is but for a moment. His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning.

(WEB)

The psalmist teaches that weeping may last for a night, but joy comes in the morning. If you are facing a hard start, name the night you are in honestly to God. Then set a small reminder for midday to look for one thing that feels like joy.

Psalm 118:24

This is the day that the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it!

(WEB)

This is a verse for choosing to receive the day as a gift from the Lord. Before your feet touch the floor, say, “This is the day the Lord has made,” and then name one ordinary thing you are grateful for in that moment.

Philippians 3:13-14

13 Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul writes that he forgets what lies behind and presses on toward the goal. Choose one next step you can take this week toward something you are trying to begin. Write it on paper and keep it where you will see it on the way out the door.

Verses for Trusting God with the Road Ahead

A fresh start asks you to walk into unknown territory. These verses are about placing your plans in God’s hands and trusting that he will guide each step. They suit the moment you are deciding what comes next, or wondering whether you are capable of it.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Solomon calls us to trust the Lord with all our heart rather than leaning only on our own understanding. When you are weighing a decision, pause and ask God to make your paths straight, then take the next small action rather than solving the whole future at once.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God speaks to Israel with reassurance: do not fear, for he is with them. When anxiety rises about a new season, breathe slowly and repeat the phrase “I am not alone” three times. Then go back to the task in front of you.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says the LORD, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

(WEB)

God declares that he knows the plans he has for his people, plans for welfare and hope. Write this verse at the top of a page in your journal, then list one hope you hold for the coming months and give it to God in prayer.

Psalm 37:5

Commit your way to the LORD. Trust also in him, and he will do this…

(WEB)

The psalmist urges us to commit our way to the Lord and trust him to act. Spend a few minutes this week naming one area where you have been trying to control the outcome, and deliberately hand it over with an open hand.

Verses for Renewal and Inner Change

Sometimes a fresh start is less about circumstances and more about the heart. These verses speak of renewal from within, the slow work of God reshaping how you think, pray and respond. They are good companions for long seasons of growth.

Romans 12:2

Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

(WEB)

Paul urges believers not to be conformed to the pattern of this world but to be transformed by the renewing of their minds. Notice one pattern of thought that keeps dragging you backward, and replace it with a truth from Scripture you can repeat during the day.

Ezekiel 36:26

I will also give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.

(WEB)

God promises to give a new heart and a new spirit to his people. If your heart feels hardened or tired, bring that honesty to God in prayer. Ask him to soften what has grown stiff, and expect the change to come gradually.

Psalm 51:10

Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.

(WEB)

David’s prayer after his failure asks God to create a clean heart and renew a steadfast spirit within him. Pray these words slowly over one week, letting each phrase settle before moving to the next.

Ephesians 4:23-24

23 And that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on the new man, who in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of truth.

(WEB)

Paul writes about being renewed in the spirit of your mind and putting on the new self. Each morning this week, choose one specific way you want to live differently that day, and write it on your hand or a sticky note.

Revelation 21:5

He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” He said, “Write, for these words of God are faithful and true.”

(WEB)

The one seated on the throne declares that he makes all things new. Let this verse close your day with hope, noticing one small thing that feels fresh or restored before you sleep.

How to Use These Verses

Reading a list of verses once rarely changes much, so choose two or three that speak most directly to your situation and return to them over several weeks. Write them on index cards for the bathroom mirror, the car dashboard or the kitchen counter. Many people find it helpful to read one verse aloud each morning as the day begins and to revisit it briefly in the evening.

Pray the verses rather than only reading them. Turn a verse into a sentence addressed to God, such as “Lord, you say your mercies are new each morning, so I ask you to show me your mercy today.” Keep a simple record of what you notice, because over time you will see how God has been faithful in the ordinary days that make up a fresh start.

A Short Prayer for Fresh Starts

Lord, I come to you aware of what I am leaving behind and what I hope to begin. Thank you that your mercies are new every morning and that you make all things new. Forgive me for the places where I have held on to old failures, and help me to receive your grace with an open heart. Give me courage for the first steps and patience for the slow work of change. Guide my plans and keep me close to you along the way. Amen.
