This page gives you Scripture passages about generosity, arranged by the situations where giving is hardest to remember: a tight budget, a need you can see, a day when you feel you have nothing to spare. It is for anyone who wants God’s word to shape how they share money, time and attention. Each passage below is paired with a short reflection and one practical way to act on it.

These verses share a common thread. Generosity in Scripture is rooted in God’s own giving, it is measured by the heart more than the amount, and it is tied to trust that God will supply what is needed. Read together, they show that open hands are a form of worship rather than a loss.

Verses for the Moment You Feel You Have Nothing to Give

Many people assume generosity waits until there is extra money or spare time. These passages speak to the gap between what you have and what you wish you could share, and they point to the way God meets people in that gap.

2 Corinthians 9:8

And God is able to make all grace abound to you, that you, always having all sufficiency in everything, may abound to every good work.

(WEB)

Paul writes that God is able to make every grace abound toward you so that you will have enough for every good work. Before your next gift, pause and ask God to show you the good work in front of you, then give what you can without waiting to feel rich.

Proverbs 11:24-25

24 There is one who scatters, and increases yet more. There is one who withholds more than is appropriate, but gains poverty. 25 The liberal soul shall be made fat. He who waters shall be watered also himself.

(WEB)

Proverbs describes a generous person who gains more by giving freely, and a stingy person who ends up with less. Notice where you are tempted to hold tight this week, and choose one small, specific act of sharing instead.

Luke 6:38

“Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be given to you. For with the same measure you measure it will be measured back to you.”

(WEB)

Jesus teaches that what you give will be measured back to you, and this is often read as a promise about money alone. Look at it as a principle about the whole of life, and decide today to be the first to offer help in a conversation or a task.

Verses for Giving When a Need Is Right in Front of You

Some of the strongest biblical teaching on generosity is about responding to a specific person in trouble. These passages call you to notice the one who is hungry, cold or lonely and to act without delay.

1 John 3:17-18

17 But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and closes his heart of compassion against him, how does God’s love remain in him? 18 My little children, let’s not love in word only, or with the tongue only, but in deed and truth.

(WEB)

John asks how God’s love can dwell in someone who sees a brother in need and closes their heart. He urges action over words alone. When you next learn of a real need, make a concrete offer of help within the day rather than only saying you will pray.

Deuteronomy 15:10-11

10 You shall surely give, and your heart shall not be grieved when you give to him; because that for this thing the LORD your God will bless you in all your work, and in all that you put your hand to. 11 For the poor will never cease out of the land. Therefore I command you to surely open your hand to your brother, to your needy, and to your poor, in your land.

(WEB)

Moses tells Israel to give freely to the poor and not to grudge the giving, because God blesses the one who opens a hand. Check your reaction the next time a request comes in. If resentment rises, stop and tell God honestly, then give anyway if you are able.

Matthew 25:35-36

35 For I was hungry, and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty, and you gave me drink. I was a stranger, and you took me in. 36 I was naked, and you clothed me. I was sick, and you visited me. I was in prison, and you came to me.’

(WEB)

Jesus identifies himself with the hungry, the stranger and the sick, and says that serving them is serving him. Think of one person in your own circle who is isolated right now, and send them a message, a meal or a visit this week.

Verses on Generosity as a Daily Habit of the Heart

Generosity is more than an occasional donation. These passages describe a settled attitude toward possessions, time and people, one that shows up in ordinary choices across the day.

Acts 20:35

In all things I gave you an example, that so laboring you ought to help the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

(WEB)

Paul recalls words of Jesus that it is more blessed to give than to receive. This turns the usual calculation upside down. Tonight, name one thing you received today and then give someone else something of equal worth, even if it is only your attention.

Matthew 6:19-21

19 “Don’t lay up treasures for yourselves on the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consume, and where thieves don’t break through and steal; 21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

(WEB)

Jesus says where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Generosity loosens the grip of things on the heart. Review your spending for the past week and identify one purchase you could redirect to someone who needs it more.

Galatians 6:9-10

9 Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let’s do what is good toward all men, and especially toward those who are of the household of the faith.

(WEB)

Paul encourages believers not to grow weary in doing good, and to do good to all people, especially those of the household of faith. Choose one ongoing act of kindness and commit to it for a month, even when it feels unnoticed.

Verses on Generosity Toward Those Closest to You

Generosity often begins at home, with family, friends and the church community. These passages show how open hands within your own relationships reflect the character of God.

Romans 12:13

Contributing to the needs of the saints; given to hospitality.

(WEB)

Paul instructs believers to contribute to the needs of the saints and to pursue hospitality. Think about who in your fellowship is carrying a burden you have not asked about. Invite them for a meal or ask a direct, practical question about what they need.

Hebrews 13:16

But don’t forget to be doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

(WEB)

The writer reminds readers not to forget to do good and to share what they have, because such sacrifices please God. Before you buy something for yourself this week, ask whether a friend could use the same thing more.

Philippians 2:4

Each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.

(WEB)

Paul urges each person to look not only to their own interests but also to the interests of others. Practice this at home by asking one family member what would help them most today, then doing it without being asked.

1 Timothy 6:17-18

17 Charge those who are rich in this present world that they not be haughty, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on the living God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy; 18 that they do good, that they be rich in good works, that they be ready to distribute, willing to share…

(WEB)

Paul charges those who are rich to be rich in good works, ready to share and willing to give. Consider where you hold more than you need, and make one plan to share it with someone in your church or town this month.

How to Use These Verses

Write two or three of these passages on a card and keep it where you will see it each morning, such as near the kitchen sink, your car keys or your phone charger. Reading one verse before you open your bills or your calendar turns a routine task into a moment of remembering whose resources these are.

Pray each passage back to God rather than only reading it. Ask him to show you one specific person or need, and then act on what comes to mind within a day or two. Over time these verses will train your instincts so that giving becomes a reflex rather than a decision you dread.

A Short Prayer for Generosity

Lord, you gave your own Son out of love for the world, and every good gift I have comes from your hand. Loosen my grip on what I call mine and teach me to open my hands to the people you place in my path. When I feel I have nothing to give, remind me that you supply what is needed for every good work. Make my giving honest, joyful and unhurried, and let my generosity point others toward your faithfulness. Amen.
