BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

This list gives you Bible verses that call believers to pray for other people, whether a friend in crisis, a family member who has drifted, a leader you have never met, or a coworker whose name you keep meaning to bring before God. These passages share one conviction: intercession is a real and expected part of Christian life, and God hears prayers offered on behalf of someone else.

Verses for Praying When a Friend Is Struggling

Sometimes the person you are praying for is sitting across the table from you, and sometimes they are hundreds of miles away. These verses encourage you to bring their specific needs to God, to pray with honesty, and to keep praying even when you cannot see any change yet.

James 5:16

Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.

(WEB)

James ties the power of prayer to the faithfulness of the one praying. Pick one friend this week and pray for them by name every morning, then send a short text saying you did. Consistency turns a passing thought into a steady habit of care.

Philippians 1:3-4

3 I thank my God whenever I remember you, 4 always in every request of mine on behalf of you all, making my requests with joy…

(WEB)

Paul prays for the Philippians with joy, not guilt or worry. Try opening your prayers for others with thanksgiving for what God has already done in their life, then move to what you are asking for. Gratitude keeps intercession from becoming a list of complaints.

Romans 15:30

Now I beg you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ, and by the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in your prayers to God for me…

(WEB)

Paul asks the believers in Rome to join him in prayer, which shows that intercession is shared work. When a friend asks you to pray, take that request seriously and write it in your prayer notes, even if it feels small.

Verses for Praying Over Family and Children

Family members often carry the heaviest burdens and the deepest hopes in our prayers. The verses here show intercession as a steady, long-term commitment, the kind parents, grandparents, and siblings make over years rather than days.

Ephesians 6:18

With all prayer and requests, praying at all times in the Spirit, and being watchful to this end in all perseverance and requests for all the saints…

(WEB)

Paul tells believers to pray at all times and for all the saints, which includes your household. Try setting a reminder to pray for one family member at the same time each day, such as while the coffee brews or before you turn off the bedroom light.

1 Thessalonians 5:17

Pray without ceasing.

(WEB)

Constant prayer does not mean long hours on your knees. It means keeping a line open to God so that your family is never far from your thoughts. Keep a short, repeated phrase ready for those moments in the car or at the sink.

Colossians 1:9

For this cause, we also, since the day we heard this, don’t cease praying and making requests for you, that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding…

(WEB)

Paul prays that believers would be filled with knowledge of God’s will and wisdom to live it out. When you pray for a child or grandchild, ask for wisdom for the decisions they face this season, not only for protection from trouble.

Verses for Praying for Leaders and Strangers

Intercession is not limited to the people we already love. Scripture calls believers to pray for those in authority and for people far outside our circles, including those we will never meet face to face.

1 Timothy 2:1-2

1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: 2 for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.

(WEB)

Paul urges prayers for kings and everyone in authority, whatever you think of their politics. Choose one elected official or local leader and pray for their wisdom and integrity this week, whether or not you agree with their decisions.

Matthew 5:44

But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you…

(WEB)

Jesus includes praying for those who hurt us in His call to love our enemies. Start small: name one person who has wronged you and ask God to bless them, even if you only manage a sentence before the anger returns.

Job 42:10

The LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends. The LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.

(WEB)

After Job prayed for his friends, who had misjudged him, God restored Job’s fortunes. Intercession for people who have disappointed you can soften your own heart, so bring their names before God even when the prayer feels awkward.

Verses for Praying in Times of Crisis

When someone you love is in danger, grieving, or facing a decision that could change everything, these verses help you pray with urgency and trust together.

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

The psalmist names God as a refuge and a present help in trouble. When you pray for someone in crisis, remind them and yourself where help is found by saying their name alongside a short statement of God’s character.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God speaks directly to His people in fear and promises His presence and strength. Pray this verse aloud over someone who feels afraid, and then offer to sit with them or call them later in the day.

Hebrews 4:16

Let us therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace for help in time of need.

(WEB)

The writer invites believers to approach God’s throne with confidence and receive mercy in time of need. Pray for others with that same boldness, asking plainly for what they need without softening your request out of politeness.

Romans 8:26

In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered.

(WEB)

When we do not know what to pray, the Spirit intercedes for us. If you feel too overwhelmed to find words for someone, you can simply hold their name before God and trust that He understands the need better than you do.

John 17:20-21

20 Not for these only do I pray, but for those also who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one; even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that you sent me.

(WEB)

Jesus prays not only for His disciples but for those who will believe through their message, including you. Read this passage when you want to pray for future generations or for people you may never meet, and let Christ’s own prayer shape your asking.

How to Use These Verses

Write the verse you are praying with at the top of a page in a notebook or a notes app, then list the names of the people you are praying for underneath. Add the date beside each name, and return to the list once a week to note any answered prayer or new need. Seeing the record grow reminds you that your intercession is part of an ongoing conversation with God.

Pick one verse for each week rather than trying to pray through the whole list at once. Read it slowly, pray for one or two people while it stays in mind, and close by thanking God for them. Over time these verses become familiar enough that you can call them to mind during a commute or a long wait.

A Short Prayer for Praying for Others

Lord, you hear every name we bring before you, and you care for each person more than we ever could. Teach us to pray for our friends, our families, our leaders, and even those who have hurt us, with honesty and with hope. When we do not know what to say, help us trust your Spirit to carry our groaning into your presence. Keep our hearts tender toward the people you place on our minds, and show us how to love them through our prayers and our actions. Thank you for listening, and for answering in your own good time. Amen.

A Blessing

May the Lord who hears every prayer keep the people you carry before Him close to His heart. May He give them peace in their trouble, wisdom in their choices, and the sense of being known and loved. And may He use your faithful intercession to bring them closer to Himself.
