BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

This list gives you Bible verses about work, arranged by the moments of a working day and by the different kinds of labor people do. It is written for employees, business owners, parents working from home, students with part-time jobs, and anyone whose hands or mind are busy with a task that matters. The verses share a common thread: work is part of how God made human life, and our effort can be offered to him with honesty, diligence and care.

Verses for the Morning Before the Day Begins

Many people wake up already dreading the hours ahead. These verses speak to that first hour, when the to-do list feels heavier than the coffee tastes. They remind you that your work is not only something to survive but something to bring before God before anything else happens.

Psalm 90:17

Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us; establish the work of our hands for us; yes, establish the work of our hands.

(WEB)

Before you open your inbox, ask God to establish the work of your hands. Write this verse on a sticky note and place it near your keyboard, so the first thing you see reminds you that the results are not yours to carry alone.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Paul writes to people who worked for owners they did not choose. Picture your employer, your client or your team, then imagine doing the same task as if Jesus were the one reviewing it. Let that change the quality of the next small job you finish.

Proverbs 16:3

Commit your deeds to the LORD, and your plans shall succeed.

(WEB)

Commit your plans for the day to the Lord before you start them. Name the two or three outcomes you are working toward and say them out loud in a short prayer. This habit turns a crowded calendar into an offering rather than a contest.

Verses for Hard Days and Difficult People

Some work is tiring because of its demands, and some because of the people involved. The verses in this section do not pretend the pressure is small. They point to a God who sees the labor you do when no one praises it and who strengthens tired hands.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Paul uses the image of a harvest, which only comes after long seasons of unseen effort. When a project drags on, mark one small finish line each week and celebrate it quietly. Persistence is easier when you can see the progress that the calendar hides.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

This verse speaks to weariness that sleep alone cannot fix. When you feel spent in the late afternoon, pause for two minutes, breathe slowly and ask God for the strength you do not have on your own. Then take the next step rather than the whole mountain.

Ephesians 6:7

With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men…

(WEB)

Paul’s words to servants apply to anyone who answers to a boss or a difficult client. Serve the work and the people in it with goodwill, even when they are not warm in return. You may be the only steady, kind presence in a room, and that matters.

Verses on Excellence, Honesty and Integrity

Doing good work is about more than producing results. These verses address how we work: whether we are honest about our hours, careful with what we are given, and willing to do a task well even when no one is checking.

Proverbs 22:29

Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve kings. He won’t serve obscure men.

(WEB)

Skill and diligence are noticed over time. Instead of chasing shortcuts, spend a little extra effort learning one tool or one part of your field well. Growing in competence is a quiet way of honoring God with the gifts you have been given.

Proverbs 11:1

A false balance is an abomination to the LORD, but accurate weights are his delight.

(WEB)

Honest weights and measures stand for every kind of honest dealing today. Check your timesheet, your expense report and your promises to clients. Small accuracy builds the trust that makes larger opportunities possible.

Ecclesiastes 9:10

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work, nor plan, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, where you are going.

(WEB)

Qoheleth, the teacher, reminds the reader that the time for work is limited and real. Rather than postponing what matters, give your full attention to the task in front of you today. Whole-hearted effort is a form of gratitude for the days you have.

Verses for Rest, Provision and Trusting God with the Outcome

Work is important, but it is not ultimate. These verses guard against the belief that your value depends on your output. They invite you to rest, to trust God with what you cannot control, and to receive your daily bread as a gift.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus offers rest to people who are exhausted by their burdens. At the end of a workday, take a few minutes to set down the job before walking through the door. Let this invitation shape how you close your laptop and how you enter your home.

Genesis 2:15

The LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.

(WEB)

Work existed before the fall, given to humanity as a meaningful calling in God’s good world. Remember that tending, building and caring for things is part of how you reflect God’s own character, even on ordinary Tuesdays.

Philippians 4:6

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

(WEB)

Anxiety about deadlines, budgets and job security is common. Bring each worry to God in specific prayer, naming the deadline or the decision. Pray with thanks for what has already been provided, which steadies the heart for what comes next.

How to Use These Verses

Choose one or two verses each week rather than trying to memorize the whole list. Write them on index cards, in the notes app on your phone, or on the inside cover of your planner. Read them at the start of the day, at a lunch break, or during the commute home, where they can interrupt the rush of thoughts.

Pray the verses instead of only reading them. Turn Colossians 3:23 into a request for help with a specific report, or turn Matthew 11:28 into a short confession before you go to sleep. Over time, the words of Scripture will shape how you speak about your job to colleagues, family and yourself.

A Short Prayer for Work

Lord, thank you for the work you have placed in my hands. Establish what I do today, and help me to do it with honesty and care. When I feel tired, give me your strength, and when I am tempted to cut corners, remind me that you see what I do in secret. Teach me to rest in you, not in my results, and to receive each day’s provision with gratitude. Amen.
