This list gives you Bible verses for the long road of recovery, whether you are working through an addiction, healing from surgery, or rebuilding after a loss. Each verse is paired with a short reflection and a practical way to carry it through the day. The verses share a common thread: God meets people in weakness, does not leave them to recover alone, and is faithful even when progress feels slow.

Verses for the Hard Days When Progress Feels Slow

Recovery rarely moves in a straight line. Some mornings feel hopeful and others feel like starting over. The verses in this section speak to the discouragement that comes when healing takes longer than you expected.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Written from the ruins of Jerusalem, these lines remind you that God’s mercy is renewed each morning. On a difficult day, write the phrase “new every morning” on a card and read it before you look at your phone or check the news.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Isaiah says that God gives strength to the weary and that waiting on him renews strength. When your energy runs out by mid-afternoon, pause for two minutes, name what you are tired of, and ask God to supply the strength you lack.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Paul warns against growing weary in doing good, promising a harvest in due time. Recovery is slow work, so mark each small faithful step on a calendar and treat the marks as evidence that the harvest is coming.

Verses About Facing Temptation and Old Patterns

Recovery involves knowing where you are vulnerable and choosing a different path when the old pull returns. These verses speak to temptation, the pull of familiar habits, and the power of God to help you resist.

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

(WEB)

Paul writes that no temptation is beyond what people can bear and that God provides a way out. Before a known trigger, such as a certain street or a lonely evening, remind yourself that a way of escape already exists and then call a friend or step away.

James 1:12

Blessed is the man who endures temptation, for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to those who love him.

(WEB)

James speaks of the blessing for the one who endures trials and perseveres. When you resist a craving, name it out loud as a small act of endurance, because each refusal is part of the perseverance James describes.

Romans 8:1-2

1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made me free from the law of sin and of death.

(WEB)

Paul declares that there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. If you have relapsed, this passage tells you that failure does not cancel God’s acceptance, so return to your support plan today instead of hiding from it.

Psalm 40:2

He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand.

(WEB)

The psalmist describes being lifted out of a pit and set on firm ground. Picture your recovery in those terms, and when you feel unsteady, stand barefoot on the floor for a moment and let the image steady you.

Verses for Rebuilding Hope and Identity

Recovery is also about becoming someone new, not only about stopping something harmful. These verses speak to shame, identity and the hope of restoration that God offers.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.

(WEB)

Paul writes that anyone in Christ is a new creation and the old has passed away. When shame tells you who you are, speak this verse back and ask which part of your story God is still writing.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

The psalmist says God heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Name one wound you are carrying, such as guilt or grief, and write it down as something you are bringing to God rather than hiding.

Joel 2:25

I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the great locust, the grasshopper, and the caterpillar, my great army, which I sent among you.

(WEB)

God promises through Joel to restore the years the locusts have eaten. Think of one area of life, such as a broken relationship or lost time, and ask God to restore what you can see and what you cannot.

Isaiah 43:18-19

18 “Don’t remember the former things, and don’t consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

(WEB)

God tells the people not to dwell on the past because he is doing something new. Write down one past failure you keep returning to, then deliberately choose one small new practice this week.

Verses for Support, Community and Rest

No one recovers alone, and God often works through other people and through rest. These verses speak to connection, honesty and the value of stopping.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

The Teacher observes that two are better than one, because if one falls, the other can lift them up. Identify one person you can call when you are struggling, and tell them plainly what support you need.

Matthew 11:28-30

28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

(WEB)

Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to him and find rest. At the end of a heavy day, sit quietly for five minutes and set down the list of everything you are trying to control.

Psalm 62:1-2

1 My soul rests in God alone. My salvation is from him. 2 He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress— I will never be greatly shaken.

(WEB)

The psalmist says that his soul waits in silence for God alone. Choose a quiet moment each day, even a short one, to sit without a screen and let your thoughts settle before God.

How to Use These Verses

Write the verses you choose on index cards or in a notebook that you keep in a place you see every day, such as by the bathroom mirror or in your bag. Reading them aloud is often more helpful than reading them silently, especially in the moments when your mind is racing.

Pick a few verses that speak most directly to your current stage of recovery and read them at the same times each day, such as when you wake up, before a difficult appointment, and before bed. Pray each verse back to God in your own words, and if you have a counselor, sponsor or pastor, share which verses have helped you.

A Short Prayer for Recovery

Lord, you know the parts of my life I would rather hide and the struggles that wear me down each day. I bring my recovery to you today, asking for strength where I am weak and patience where I want quick results. Remind me that your mercy is new each morning and that you do not leave me to face temptation alone. Surround me with people who tell me the truth and help me carry my burdens, and give me rest when I am tired. Help me take one faithful step today, trusting that you are working even when I cannot see it. Amen.
