This short prayer during illness is for the days when your body is weak, your energy is gone, and you do not know what to say to God. It is written to be prayed in a hospital room, on a couch under a blanket, or beside someone you love who is unwell. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words after it.

Short Prayer During Illness

Lord, I come to you tired and in pain. You know every ache I feel and every fear that keeps me awake at night. Some of my concerns are about the sickness itself, and some are about what it will cost me: the work I cannot do, the people who depend on me, the plans I have had to set aside. I do not have to pretend I am stronger than I am. I bring you the weight of this illness just as it is.

Be near to me in the hours when the pain feels loud. Steady my breathing and calm my thoughts when they race toward the worst outcome. Give wisdom to the doctors and nurses who care for me, and patience to the family and friends who are trying to help. Where I feel weak, be my strength. Where I feel forgotten, remind me that you have seen every moment of this day.

Heal me if it is your will, and give me grace to rest if healing comes slowly. Whatever happens next, let me trust that I am held in your hands and that nothing in this sickness can separate me from your love. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am sick and I am tired. Be with me right now, in this moment. Ease what hurts, calm what frightens me, and help me rest in your care. Give strength to my body and peace to my heart, and let me feel your presence even here. Thank you that you are near. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 41:3

The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed, and restore him from his bed of illness.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of the Lord sustaining the sick on their bed and restoring them in their illness. Pray it slowly, asking God to hold you up in the places where you feel most weak and to renew your strength day by day.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Isaiah reminds us that God gives power to the faint and strength to those who have none. When your body feels drained, pray this verse as a simple admission that you need his strength more than your own.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

This verse describes God as one who heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Let it shape your prayer for both body and heart, asking him to tend to the hurts you carry beyond the physical symptoms.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

Paul heard God say that his grace was sufficient in weakness. If illness has left you feeling small or ashamed of your limits, pray this verse and ask God to show his grace in the very places you feel least able.

Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

(WEB)

The psalmist walks through the darkest valley and fears no evil because the Lord is with him. When the illness feels like a dark valley, pray this verse as a way of saying that you do not walk it alone.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer in the morning, before the day’s symptoms build, or at night when the house is quiet and the discomfort feels hardest. Sit or lie in whatever position is most comfortable for you. If you can, rest one hand on your chest or on the blanket over your legs as you pray, letting the physical touch remind you that God is attentive to your body as well as your soul.

You can also invite someone else to pray it with you or for you. A spouse, a friend, a pastor, or a family member can read the prayer aloud while you listen, which is a good way to pray when your strength is low. Keep a copy of the words somewhere easy to reach, on your phone or on a card by the bed, so that you can return to them on the days when you cannot find words of your own.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord be close to the one who is sick, and may his peace guard their heart and mind. May he give rest to the weary body, hope to the anxious spirit, and strength for the next small step. May they feel the steady love of God in every quiet hour.
