A short prayer for perseverance asks God for the strength to keep going when you are tired, discouraged, or waiting longer than you expected. You can pray it in the morning before the day’s demands begin, in the middle of a hard stretch, or late at night when the weight feels heaviest. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where your heart needs them.

Short Prayer for Perseverance

Lord, you see me today. You know how long this has been going on, and you know how tired I am of trying. Some mornings I wake up already wanting to quit, and I do not feel strong enough to take the next step. Please give me a steady heart that does not depend on how I feel. Help me keep showing up for my work, my family, and the people who count on me, even when nothing seems to change.

I also bring you the specific things I am carrying: the waiting, the setbacks, the doubts that whisper that it is not worth it. Remind me that you are at work even when I cannot see it. Give me enough strength for today and trust that you will provide for tomorrow. When I am ready to give up, let me remember that you have not given up on me. Teach me to rest in you and to keep moving forward one faithful step at a time. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am worn out and ready to stop. Give me the strength to take the next step, and then the one after that. Keep my heart steady when my hands are tired and my hope is thin. Remind me that you are with me in this, and that you will not let go of me. Help me hold on until you bring what you have promised. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Paul writes this to believers who are tired of doing good without seeing results. Pray it by asking God to keep you from growing weary in the ordinary work you are already doing, and to trust that a harvest will come in its season.

Romans 5:3-5

3 Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope: 5 and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

(WEB)

Paul connects suffering with endurance and hope. Pray these words by thanking God that hard seasons can shape your character, and ask him to help you see the difficulty you face as part of a larger work.

Hebrews 12:1-2

1 Therefore let us also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

(WEB)

The writer pictures a race and points to Jesus as the one who ran it first. Pray this passage by fixing your eyes on Christ, asking him to lay aside whatever slows you down and to help you run with patience.

James 1:12

Blessed is the man who endures temptation, for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to those who love him.

(WEB)

James speaks of blessing for the one who remains steady under trial. Pray this verse by asking God to make you someone who stays faithful when testing comes, and to remind you of the life he promises to those who love him.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Isaiah says that those who wait on the Lord will find new strength. Pray this verse when you feel completely drained, asking God to renew your energy so you can keep going without burning out.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer first thing in the morning, before the phone and the to-do list take over. Sit somewhere quiet, such as a kitchen chair, a porch, or the edge of your bed, and keep a cup of something warm nearby. If you tend to lose focus, try writing the prayer on an index card and reading it slowly with a pen in your hand.

You can also pray it with someone else. Ask a friend, spouse, or small group leader to pray the prayer with you, or to pray it over you while you listen. Some people find it easier to persevere when they know someone is standing with them. Keep the prayer somewhere you will see it during the hard hours of your day.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord strengthen the heart of the one who prays this and give that person patience for each day. May he steady their steps when the road is long and remind them that they are not walking alone. May they rest in his faithfulness and find that the work they do in him is never wasted.
