BIBLEREADER // ISABELLA WALKER

This short prayer is for coaches who want to bring their work, their players, and their own hearts before God. Pray it before practice, before a game, or on the drive home after a hard loss. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayers for Coaches

Lord, you know the weight I carry each time I walk onto the field or into the gym. I think about the players who are struggling at home, the ones who doubt themselves, and the ones who have talent but no confidence. Give me eyes to see each of them as you do, not only as stats or positions. Help me coach with patience when I want to yell, and with honesty when I want to avoid a hard conversation.

Father, keep my competitive heart in its place. Let me want to win without needing to win at any cost, and let me treat officials, opponents, and parents with respect even when tempers rise. When I make a bad call or a poor substitution, show me my mistake without letting shame take over. Remind me that my worth is not measured by the scoreboard. Guard my family from the late nights and the constant phone calls that come with this job.

Give me wisdom for the decisions no one sees: who gets playing time, how to correct a player, when to push and when to rest. Use my example to teach discipline, humility, and kindness. Let the players remember how they were treated long after the season ends. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I need you right now. Steady my voice, clear my mind, and help me see the young people in front of me as you see them. Let me coach with patience, honesty, and courage, and let my words build them up. Keep my heart humble and my focus on what matters most. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Pray this verse by asking God to make your work for your team something you offer to him. When a practice drags or a game frustrates you, return to this word and ask that your effort be shaped by faithfulness rather than applause.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage when a lineup decision or a difficult call feels impossible. Ask God to steer your judgment, especially in the moments when you feel the most certain of your own plan.

Ephesians 6:4

You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

(WEB)

Pray this for the young people you coach. Ask God to help you lead them with firmness and encouragement, never provoking them to discouragement, but raising them up with real care.

James 1:19

So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger…

(WEB)

Bring this verse into the heat of a game or a tense meeting with a parent. Ask for a quick ear, a slow tongue, and a temper that does not flare when you feel challenged or misunderstood.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Pray this to keep your coaching grounded in simple faithfulness. Ask God to shape you into someone who acts justly toward every player, loves mercy when mistakes happen, and walks humbly through the wins and losses alike.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the longer version in the quiet of your car before you walk into the facility, or in the locker room while the players are changing. Keep a hand on the whistle, the clipboard, or the ball as you pray, so your body remembers the reason you are there. Two minutes is enough to begin again.

If you coach with an assistant, a spouse, or a friend who shares the work, invite them to pray the shorter version with you before a big game. Ask one another for specific requests about players, families, and personal discouragement. Shared prayer keeps the job from becoming a burden you carry alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before every coach who leads with integrity, and may he steady every hand that holds a whistle or a playbook. May his peace settle over the long drives home, and may his strength carry you through each season. May the players you lead come to know that they are seen, valued, and loved.
