BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

This page gives you short prayers for parents, written for the moments when you want to bring your children, your home and your worries before God but do not know where to begin. Pray the main prayer aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own children’s names and needs into it. It works at the kitchen table, in the car before school, or late at night when sleep will not come.

Short Prayers for Parents

Lord, you know every one of my children by name, and you know the things I cannot see about them. You know the friend who is pulling them somewhere I would not choose, the fear that wakes them at night, and the question they have not yet found the courage to ask me. I give them to you again today. Keep them safe in body, steady in mind, and close to your heart even when I am not close enough to help.

Give me patience when I am tired and wisdom when I do not know what to say. Let my words be gentle and my correction fair. When I fail them, as I will, help me come back quickly and humbly, and let them see a parent who needs your grace too. Fill our home with your peace so that our children grow up knowing they are loved, not because they have earned it, but because you have first loved them. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my child is struggling, and I am struggling too. Calm my heart before I speak. Give me the right word, or the wise silence, and help my child feel your nearness right now. Protect them where I cannot reach, and remind me that you care for them more than I ever could. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

(WEB)

Pray this for your children’s growth, asking God to guide their hearts toward wisdom and goodness as they grow, and to give you patience to trust the long work of raising them.

Psalm 127:3

Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward.

(WEB)

Use this verse to thank God for your children as a gift rather than a burden, and to ask him to help you receive each day with that same gratitude.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

6 These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart; 7 and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.

(WEB)

Pray that God’s word would take root in your own heart first, so that your everyday conversations with your children become natural places to speak of him.

Isaiah 40:11

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.

(WEB)

Bring your children to God as the shepherd who gathers the lambs and carries them close, asking him to lead each one gently through the hard seasons ahead.

1 Peter 5:7

Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

(WEB)

When worry about your children keeps you up at night, pray this verse slowly, handing each specific fear to God and asking him to carry what you cannot.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many parents find that the early morning works best, before the house wakes up and the day’s demands begin. Sit somewhere quiet with a cup of coffee, and if you have a photograph or a small object that reminds you of your child, hold it in your hands while you pray. Naming each child slowly, and pausing after each name, gives your prayer room to breathe.

You can also pray this prayer with your spouse or another parent you trust. Take turns reading the lines, and let each of you add a child’s name or a concern that you would like the other to carry. Some families pray it together at bedtime, with the children joining in with a single sentence each. However you use it, return to it often, because the needs of a growing family change with every season.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who gave you these children watch over you as you raise them, and may his peace settle on your home like a quiet light that never goes out. May your children know they are held by a faithful Father, and may you rest tonight in the certainty that you are not doing this work alone.
