These short prayers for Pentecost are written to ask God for the same thing the first disciples received in Jerusalem: the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. Pray them on Pentecost Sunday, in the days leading up to it, or any time you want to ask the Spirit to move in your heart, your church, or your home. Each one can be read aloud exactly as written, or you can use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayers for Pentecost

Holy Spirit, you came down on the disciples like wind and fire, and they were filled with courage they did not have an hour before. I come to you today tired and unsure, and I ask you to fill me the same way. Breathe on the places in me that have gone quiet, the prayers I have stopped praying and the hopes I have stopped hoping. Give me words when I do not know what to say, and give me the nerve to speak them.

Show me where you are already working in the people around me, in my family, at my job, and in my church. Help me notice you there instead of only looking for you in big moments. Where I am proud, humble me. Where I am afraid, steady me. Where I have grown cold, warm me again with the love of the Father and the Son. Let my life bear fruit that does not come from my own effort but from your presence within me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Come, Holy Spirit. Fill me again today, the way you filled those first believers in the upper room. Give me courage for the conversation I dread, patience for the people who test me, and honesty when I want to hide. Help me hear your voice above the noise. I trust you to do in me what I cannot do myself. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Acts 2:4

They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and ask the Spirit to fill you in the same way, with a fullness that changes what you say and how you say it. Pray it for the moments when you feel like you have nothing left to offer.

John 14:26

But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you.

(WEB)

Jesus promised that the Spirit would teach and remind his people. Pray this verse when you are trying to remember a truth of God in a hard season, asking the Helper to bring it back to mind.

Romans 8:26

In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered.

(WEB)

Paul describes the Spirit helping us in our weakness. Use this verse on days when your prayers feel thin or wordless, trusting that the Spirit carries what you cannot put into words.

Galatians 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

(WEB)

Pray this list of fruit over the specific areas where you struggle most, such as impatience or anxiety. Ask the Spirit to grow what you cannot manufacture on your own.

Ezekiel 36:26

I will also give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.

(WEB)

God promised to give a new heart and a new spirit to his people. Pray this for a place in your life that feels hard or stubborn, asking God to soften it and make it responsive to him.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray these prayers early in the morning, before the day’s demands arrive. Sit somewhere quiet with a cup of coffee or tea, and read the prayer aloud once slowly. If you have a Bible open, you might read the matching verse first and let it set the tone before you speak. Some people keep a small notebook nearby and write down one thing they sense the Spirit bringing to mind.

You can also pray this with someone else, such as a spouse, a friend, or a small group on Pentecost Sunday. Take turns reading the lines, or let one person pray the main prayer while the others quietly add a sentence of their own. Praying together can remind you that the Spirit was given to the whole gathered church, not only to individuals alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Holy Spirit, who filled the first disciples with courage and truth, fill you with the same peace and boldness today. May the Spirit remind you of God’s love when you forget it and strengthen you where you feel weak. Go forward in the confidence that the One who came at Pentecost is still with you and still at work in you.
