BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This simple prayer for a student is for anyone who wants to pray over a young person’s school days, whether that is a child, a grandchild, a teen, a college freshman, or a friend heading back to class. It works well in the morning before the school day begins, during the drive to campus, or in the quiet minutes before an exam. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak more specifically about the person you are praying for.

Simple Prayer for a Student

Lord, thank you for this student and for the days ahead of them. You know the homework that feels too long, the test that makes their stomach tighten, and the classroom where they wonder if they belong. Be near them when they sit down to study and when the words on the page blur together. Give them a clear mind to take in what they are learning, and patience with themselves when progress comes slowly.

Watch over their friendships, Father. Surround them with people who encourage them to do well and to be kind, and protect them from anyone who would pull them toward harm. Where there is loneliness, meet them there. Where there is pressure to be someone they are not, remind them of who they are in you. Help them ask for help when they need it, and give them the humility to learn from their teachers and mentors. Keep their body rested, their heart steady, and their hope alive for what you have in store. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I bring this student to you right now. Calm their worries, sharpen their mind, and go with them into every class and conversation today. Help them remember that they are known by you and loved beyond what their grades say. Give them courage to try, grace when they fall short, and peace that does not depend on the outcome. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this when the student faces a decision about classes, a major, or a path they cannot yet see. Ask God to guide their steps and to help them trust him more than their own uncertain plans.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

This verse fits well before a difficult exam or a hard assignment. Pray that the student will ask God for wisdom openly, without shame, and that wisdom will come to them in the moment they need it.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage when the student is anxious about grades, rankings, or what others think. Pray that they will bring each worry to God in prayer and receive a peace that steadies their heart.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Pray this verse for a student who is tempted to cut corners or who feels their work does not matter. Ask God to help them work with care and diligence, as an offering to him rather than only for a result.

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

(WEB)

This verse is a good prayer for the student who feels lost in a subject or unsure of what comes next. Ask that God’s word would be a lamp for their feet and light for the next step, however small it is.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer in the same place and at the same time each school day, such as at the kitchen table before the backpack goes on or in the car before the door opens. A short routine helps the student know someone is holding them up even when you are not in the room. If you have a paper calendar or a note on your phone, write down upcoming tests, presentations, or hard days, and pray specifically for each one as it comes.

You do not need to pray the whole thing word for word every time. Keep a hand on the student’s shoulder, a finger on a photo, or a folded note in your pocket as a reminder. Invite a friend, spouse, or grandparent to pray with you, and let the student know they are being prayed for, if that feels right for them. Their words of thanks or their quiet nod can become part of the prayer too.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before this student into every classroom and stay beside them through every hard hour. May he give them clear thinking, honest friends, and a steady heart that rests in his love. May they know, on the days they feel small, that they are seen, known, and held.
