BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This simple prayer for humility is for those moments when you notice you want to be seen, praised or proven right, and you would rather God shape your heart than keep defending your own. Pray it in the morning before the day’s conversations begin, or in the evening when you are reviewing what was said and done. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Simple Prayer for Humility

Lord, you see me more clearly than I see myself. You know how quickly I want to be right, how often I measure my worth by who notices me, and how easily I bristle when someone corrects me or overlooks what I have done. I do not want to live that way. Teach me to think of myself less and of you and others more. Show me where I have been holding onto my reputation with a tight grip, and loosen my fingers so I can trust you with it.

Make me quick to listen and slow to defend myself. When I am tempted to explain away a mistake, give me the courage to simply say I was wrong. When someone else receives the praise I hoped for, help me to rejoice with them rather than quietly resent them. Remind me that every good thing I have comes from you, so I have nothing to boast about that I did not first receive. Form in me the quiet strength of a servant who does not need an audience.

Jesus, you emptied yourself and took the lowest place, and you did it for me. Let your humility take root in the ordinary places of my life, at my kitchen table, in my workplace, in the small arguments and the thankless tasks. I trust that you lift up the humble in your own time and in your own way, and I release my need to lift myself up. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I feel the pull to make myself look good right now. Help me to let it go. Make me willing to listen, willing to admit fault, and glad for others when they are honored. Let me remember that I am yours and that you are enough for me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Pray this verse by asking God to show you what he requires in your current situation. Ask for the grace to act justly and love mercy, and to walk humbly with him when you would rather walk ahead of him.

Philippians 2:3-4

3 Doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself; 4 each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and name one person whose interests you tend to overlook. Ask God to help you consider that person’s needs as seriously as your own, without comparing or keeping score.

James 4:10

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to God as a promise and a challenge. Ask him to bring you low where your pride needs breaking, and trust that he will lift you up at the right time.

1 Peter 5:5-6

5 Likewise, you younger ones, be subject to the elder. Yes, all of you clothe yourselves with humility, to subject yourselves to one another; for “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” 6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time…

(WEB)

Pray this passage by placing your anxieties about status and recognition under God’s strong hand. Ask him to clothe you with humility and to give you the patience to wait for his lifting.

Proverbs 11:2

When pride comes, then comes shame, but with humility comes wisdom.

(WEB)

Use this proverb to examine the areas where you hope to gain advantage. Ask God to give you wisdom that comes with humility rather than the hollow success that pride can bring.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a steady moment of the day, perhaps while your coffee is brewing or before you open your email. Sit somewhere quiet, and if you are able, keep your hands open on your lap or resting on a table. Open hands can be a physical reminder that you are releasing your need to control how others see you. Pray slowly, pausing after each sentence to let it sink in.

You might also pray this prayer with a trusted friend, spouse or small group, taking turns reading a line each. Praying alongside someone who knows your tendencies can keep you honest and accountable. Afterward, consider writing down one specific moment in the coming day when you can practice listening first or giving credit to someone else.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord, who humbled himself for your sake, teach you to walk gently and speak truthfully. May he free you from the need to be noticed and fill you with the peace of being fully known and loved. May he lift you up in his perfect time, and may you rest in that faithful hand.
